In-State Tuition Agreement Between Ramapo College and Rockland Community College to End

(Mahwah) – Ramapo College of New Jersey will discontinue its offer of in-state tuition rates for students transferring from Rockland Community College (RCC) in New York, effective fall 2004. Students from RCC who enroll before that date will continue to receive in-state rates.

In the mid-1980s, as a young college, Ramapo explored means of boosting the student population. Noting that the number of transfer students from Rockland Community College was small even though Ramapo was closer to home for many Rockland students than were the SUNY schools, Ramapo administrators proposed the offer of in-state tuition to RCC students. At the time, the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition was not that great. Students from RCC received in-state tuition rates if they transferred directly to Ramapo following completion of their associate’s degree. The plan worked and served to attract greater numbers of Rockland County students, contributing to the overall enrollment increase of 25 percent during the late 1980s.

Currently, enrollment at Ramapo is at an all-time high; the number of applicants has increased by 98 percent during the last seven years. Students attending Ramapo College represent every county in the state, 20 states and 66 foreign countries. Acknowledging the support the college receives from the citizens of New Jersey, the administration decided that the college must give priority to in-state students.
