Muslim Mosaic Teach-In At Ramapo College Will Address Social, Religious and Gender Issues

(Mahwah) – Muslim Mosaic: Understanding Our Neighbors, Understanding Our World, a two-day teach-in that will bring together Muslim and American college students, professors, administrators, religious leaders and community members, will be held at Ramapo College of New Jersey Thursday and Friday, October 24 and 25. The first sessions begin at 10 a.m. Panels, lectures, guest speakers and dialogue are scheduled.

Guest speakers include Hani Khoury, Esq., an attorney and member of the Steering Committee of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, New Jersey Chapter, who will speak October 24 at 12:45 p.m., on civil rights in the Muslim community. At 7 p.m. that night, Dr. Ghazi Khankan, director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, New York Chapter, will speak on the topic, Understanding Our Muslim Neighbors.” Dr. Jabbar Al-Obaidi, professor of mass communications at Bridgewater State College will speak at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 25. The Role of the Media in U.S./Islamic Relations,” will be his topic.

The event is funded by a federally supported grant from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and matching support from the College. All sessions will be held in The Trustees Pavilion. In addition to the guest speakers mentioned above, they include:

  • Lecture: Islam and the West” – Dr. Sam Mustafa, assistant professor of global studies/world history at Ramapo College
  • Panel discussion: Ramapo Muslim students and alumni speak about their life at Ramapo
  • Panel discussion: Women and Men in Islam” – Led by Dr. Khaled El-Mattrawy, assistant professor of economics at Ramapo College
  • Lecture: Social Issues in the Islamic World” – Dr. Erin Augis, assistant professor of sociology at Ramapo College
  • Lunch/panel: Around the World in Islam: A Ramapo Perspective” – Dr. Bill Frech, associate professor of international business at Ramapo College; Dr. Khaled El-Mattrawy, assistant professor of economics at Ramapo; and Leyla Amzi, Ramapo alumnus.
  • Panel: Life After 9/11″ – Shqipe Malushi, executive director, Albanian-American Women’s Organization and a representative from Muslims Against Terrorism
