Weekend Edition 11/6-11/9

Thursday, November 6th, head to Friends Hall at 10 pm to watch Carlos Gomez perform! Carlos Gomez is an award-winning poet, actor, and writer from New York City with a talent for storytelling. He is author of the memoir Man Up: Reimagining Modern Manhood, and was nominated for the Pushcart Prize and named Artist of the Year at the 2009 Promoting Outstanding Writers Awards.  Gomez costarred in Spike Lee’s #1 movie Inside Man with Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster, and Clive Owen and appeared in the sixth season of HBO’s Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry and in the third season of TV One’s Verses and Flow. A former social worker and inner city school teacher, Carlos Gomez has devoted his life to helping others and looks to teach men to break rules of male conformity and challenge stereotyped notions of manhood. Don’t miss this educational and entertaining event co-sponsored by the Women’s Center and the College Programming Board, and catch sneak peeks of his poetry here.

Friday, November 7th join the Civic and Community Engagement Center at 8 am for their service trip to House on a Hill in Goshen, NY. House on the Hill is a day care center that works specifically with children from immigrant families. Volunteers will have the opportunity to spend a day working with these children and assisting teachers in their classrooms with various activities. Make sure to take advantage of this learning experience and potential CEC opportunity! Later at 10pm in Alumni Lounges is Cultural Food Fest sponsored by the College Programming Board! Stop by and try some delicious foods, enjoy some fun cultural activities, and watch a performance by the Brazilian Percussion Ensemble! All clubs are invited to take part in this event, and if you would like to contribute in some way please reach out to the College Programming Board at cpb@ramapo.edu!

Saturday, November 8th at 9:30 a.m the Civic and Community Engagement Center will be hosting their weekly tutoring trip to Teaneck, NJ! They will be focusing on subjects such as Math, Language Arts, Social Studies and Arts & Crafts. No experience in tutoring is necessary. This project is great for students seeking CEC credit and for those in the process of receiving their teaching certification! At 10pm, the College Programming Board will be holding a Silent Library event in the Pavilion! Based on the hit MTV show, teams will have to work together to pull of hilarious stunts while making as little noise as possible. Teams that make too much noise will be eliminated! Winners will have a chance at prizes! Bring your friends and take part in this hysterical game show experience!

But the fun doesn’t end with the weekend! Every Tuesday the College Programming Board presents the Tuesday Night Live Series. Each week features either a live performance by a comedian, musical artist, slam poet, spoken word artist or magician or an open mic night during which Ramapo students have the opportunity to showcase their talent. This Tuesday, November 11th, Jared Mahone will be returning to the Ramapo College campus to perform! An acoustic singer-songwriter, Jared is one of the most booked performers in the college market. He has performed at hundreds of campuses and has sold out concerts around the country performing his unique mix of garage soul music. An all-around nice, funny guy, you’ll absolutely love watching him on stage! To listen to some of Jared’s music, click here.
