Our Mission​

Digital Humanities at Ramapo combines innovative technology and the versatile methods of humanistic research to create public-facing scholarship and partner with community groups to develop applied humanities projects. Through class assignments and research opportunities, Ramapo students hone their skills in research, critical analysis, and storytelling while learning sought-after technical skills including data design and visualization, oral histories, podcasting, digital storytelling, geographic information systems and educational technologies.

What are the Digital Humanities​?

The Digital Humanities bring together the humanities and technology in exciting ways. By using digital tools, it opens up how you explore, analyze, and share history, literature, and culture—making these fields more accessible and engaging for everyone.

At Ramapo College, the digital humanities involves the digitization of texts, cultural artifacts, and historical documents. It also includes computational text analysis, data mining, and visualization. Ramapo students develop proficiency in research, critical analysis, and storytelling while also learning sought-after technical skills like data design, visualization, oral histories, podcasting, digital storytelling, GIS, and educational technologies.

Digital Humanities encourages collaboration across disciplines. It often brings together scholars from history, literature, computer science, and more. Together, they create innovative projects that push the boundaries of research.

For example, you might build virtual exhibits in Fortnite to explore history and culture in creative ways. While the Jane Addams Papers Project gives students the chance to digitize, annotate, and publish historic documents online—a great experience in editing and research. You may also work with faculty on community projects like “Mapping the Ramapough Munsee Lenape Nation” or “Englewood Makes History,” which involve building interactive maps, digital exhibits, and online archives that preserve local stories and present narratives in a more engaging and interactive way.

In essence, the digital humanities represents a new way of engaging with cultural and historical content. By integrating technology into humanities scholarship, it facilitates new insights and forms of expression. As technology evolves, so too will the scope and impact of digital humanities.

Ramapo professors are active in the Digital Humanities world, bringing in grants, running workshops, and embedding digital methods into their classes. That means students are exposed to the latest DH tools and practices. In some cases, they also get hands-on, graduate level experience not typically found in undergraduate studies.
