Today, April 24th the Civic and Community Engagement Center continues Civic Engagement Week with a screening of the documentary Blackfish at 5:30 p.m. in the Laurel Hall Screening Room. Blackfish tells the story of Tilikum, a performing killer whale that killed several people while in captivity. Along the way, director-producer Gabriela Cowperthwaite compiles shocking footage and emotional interviews to explore the creature’s extraordinary nature, the species’ cruel treatment in captivity, the lives and losses of the trainers and the pressures brought to bear by the multi-billion dollar sea-park industry. A discussion and reflection session will take place following the film.
Friday, April 25th at 4:00 p.m. volunteer at Extra Mile with the Civic and Community Engagement Center! Extra Mile is one of the only mobile soup kitchens in Newark that originated with the Newman Catholic Club serving Rutgers Newark, NJIT, Essex County College and UMDNJ. Students will make sandwiches for the homeless and then walk a short distance to Penn Station to deliver the prepared bagged lunches where they will be encouraged to talk and interact with the homeless. There are only 6 student spots for the trip, so contact the CCEC at ccec@ramapo.edu or call 201-684-7586 to ask about availability. Later at 8:00 p.m., the CCEC will also be hosting their annual Night Without a Home event! This night long, hands-on experience featuring speakers, documentaries, and more provides a safe and educational setting for the Ramapo College Community to engage in hunger and homelessness awareness. Tracking their journey throughout the night alongside a biography of a homeless individual, participants will have an opportunity to connect with someone who has actually experienced the struggle. If you are interested in participating in this event, please stop by the CCEC Office at SC213 to pick up a contract and emergency contact sheet! Finally, end the night with some delicious frozen yogurt at Fro Yo Friday sponsored by the College Programming Board. This event, taking place at 9pm in J.Lee’s will feature your favorite fro-yo flavors and countless toppings to choose from! Don’t miss out on this delicious affair!
Saturday, April 26th the College Programming Board and numerous co-sponsoring clubs are hosting Boardwalk Day from 1pm-5pm at the Arch! Come enjoy the warm weather with authentic boardwalk-style food, sidewalk chalk, boardwalk games and activities, DJ music, and more! And the fun doesn’t have to end once the sun goes down! Head over to Late Night afterwards for a specially themed meal.
Don’t forget to stop by the athletic games this weekend! On Saturday, the Women’s Lacrosse team will play Stockton College at 1pm and the Men’s Tennis team will play a TBD competitor at 2pm. And on Sunday, the Women’s Soccer team will be playing as part of Alumni/Family Day!
The fun doesn’t end with the weekend! Every Tuesday the College Programming Board presents the Tuesday Night Live Series. Each week features either a live performance by a comedian, musical artist, slam poet, spoken word artist or magician or an open mic night during which Ramapo students have the opportunity to showcase their talent. This coming Tuesday, April 29th Jessica Kirson will be performing at Ramapo! Jessica is a comedian with an electrifyingly funny performance and a wide array of on-stage characters. She was selected to perform at the Hamptons, Toyota, Marshall’s Women in Comedy, Comedy Central’s South Beach, Montreal, and HBO’s Las Vegas comedy festivals. Jessica was also awarded “Best Female Comic” by the MAC association in New York City and recently accepted the Nightlife Award for “Best Stand-up Comedian” in New York City. Her YouTube channel “The Jessy K Show” has more than 100 videos with a combined total of over 2.5 million views and she recently launched her own podcast called “The Jessica Kirson Podcast.” Jessica has also been featured on both ABC and NBC shows and will be on the big screen in Nick Cannon’s Cliques with George Lopez and Jim Breuer.
