The fun doesn’t end with the weekend. Every Tuesday the College Programming Board presents the Tuesday Night Live Series. Each week features either a live performance by a comedian, musical artist, slam poet, spoken word artist or magician or an open mic night during which Ramapo students have the opportunity to showcase their talent. Tuesday, April 15th Mayhem Poets will perform in addition to open-mic night. This group takes spoken word poetry to a whole new level with combinations of hip hop, theater improv, and stand-up comedy in their performance. They were featured on the Today Show and Eyewitness News after they won first place and a grant for $100,000 in the Microsoft Idea Wins Challenge in 2006 and they’ve been touring internationally with hip hop musicians and artists ever since. Mayhem Poets started up at Rutgers University in 2000 when two of its members started an open-mic on campus called Verbal Mayhem. From then on, the Mayhem Poets made it their mission to change people’s lives through poetry. They look at contemporary world issues in their performance and look to access people from all walks of life through spoken word. For more information about Mayhem Poets and clips of their performances, check out their website: http://www.mayhempoets.com/.
Also taking place on April 15th is the Annual Diversity Convocation starting at 3:30 p.m. in Friends Hall! This year’s speaker is Shane Windmeyer. Shane is a national leader on gay and lesbian civil rights issues and a champion for LGBT issues on College Campuses. He is also the Cofounder and Executive Director of Campus Pride, the only national organization for student leaders and campus organizations working to create a safer college environment for LGBT students. Shane will be speaking to the Ramapo Community earlier in the day, and a small dinner will take place later in the evening.
