Center for Student Involvement (CSI)

Weekend Edition November 21st-24th

This Thursday, November 21st, don’t forget to donate to the Thanksgiving Food Drive, hosted by the Civic and Community Engagement Center, which is going on through the end of the month. Then stop by SC-136 at 1pm for another CCEC event, “Do You Want Fries With That?”: The Story Behind the Food Workers Who Serve You. Martha Ecker, Professor of Sociology, will lead a discussion about the food industry and the daily struggles food workers endure. Come find out how you can help bring about more fair and just working conditions for food workers.  This event is part of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week and would make for a great CEC opportunity! Later, drop by Friends Hall at 9pm for Trivia Night, hosted by the College Programming Board. Come test your knowledge for the chance to win prizes and enjoy some delicious wings, fried ravioli, and mozzarella sticks! Participants will also be given buzzers to give their answers with, just like at Applebee’s or Buffalo Wild Wings trivia nights! Beverages will also be provided.

Friday, November 22nd, join the Civic and Community Engagement Center in volunteering at Extra Mile, one of the only mobile soup kitchens in Newark, from 4:15 to 9:15pm. Students will make sandwiches for the homeless and then walk a short distance to Penn Station to deliver the prepared bagged lunches.  There will also be an hour where everyone will get the opportunity to interact and talk with the homeless. Supervisors and patrolmen will be around to ensure safety for all visitors. Don’t miss out on this eye-opening experience and help go that extra mile to help the homeless! If interested, contact the CCEC at extension 7586 or stop by the office located in SC-213 behind the student center. Then at 9pm, stop by Pavilion for Poker and More night hosted by the College Programming Board. Put your skills to the test with some classic casino games for a chance to win some great prizes! Food and beverages will also be available.

November 23rd, join the Civic and Community Engagement Center at 9am in tutoring kids from Kindergarten to 12th grade for their weekly volunteer trip to Teaneck, NJ. Volunteers will be focusing on subjects such as Math, Language Arts, and Arts & Crafts. No experience in tutoring is necessary, so everyone is welcome! This project is also great for service learning students and for those in the process of receiving their teaching certification! Later at 11:30 am is the NJAC Basketball Kickoff Tailgate! Stop by Bradley Center where they will be raffling off iPads, $500 Ramapo Dollars, Rowdie Gear, and gift cards! There will also be free food, DJ entertainment, giveaways, and more. Get raffle tickets for wearing maroon and for all the events you attend! Then at 1pm the Women’s Basketball team will play New Jersey City University and the Men’s Basketball team will play at 3pm. Don’t miss out on all the athletics fun!  After the games and tailgate, come to Friends Hall later at 9pm for the Homegrown Band Showcase hosted by College Programming Board. Homegrown is a night of music from bands made up of your fellow Ramapo students. Come get a taste of the local sound!  There will also be two stages set up on each side of Friends Hall for non-stop music fun all night long!

After Saturday, we are on break until after Thanksgiving. When you return, kick off the last two week of classes and programs with this semester’s last Tuesday Night Live. Every Tuesday the College Programming Board presents the Tuesday Night Live Series. Each week features either a live performance by a comedian, musical artist, slam poet, spoken word artist or magician or an open mic night during which Ramapo students have the opportunity to showcase their talent. On December 3rd, Ran’d Shine will be performing at Ramapo. Ran’d is a magician who mixes his passion for magic with his cultural roots in Africa, where he has traveled to perform. President Obama thought enough of Ran’d to ask him to perform at the military’s prestigious “Salute to Heroes Inaugural Banquet and Ball!” To check out Ran’d ‘s performance, click here.
