Job Summary

Under the supervision of Stacks Maintenance Supervisor, performs library work related to shelving and stack maintenance; does other work as assigned.

Duties

  1. Shelves books according to the Library of Congress Classification System.
  2. Shelf reads stacks to ensure that books, periodicals, and videos are in correct Library of Congress Classification System order.
  3. Picks up books on tables, straightens chairs, and turns in patrons’ misplaced personal belongings to Circulation Desk.
  4. Processes and shelves new periodicals. Re-shelves periodicals that have been accessed by patrons.
  5. Maintains accurate records of the number of books shelved and areas shelf read for every shift.
  6. Straightens untidy shelves.
  7. Assists permanent staff in measuring the linear feet of library material and the amount of shelving available in order to assess the needs of collection growth.
  8. Shifts books to make room for collection growth when required.
  9. Answer basic directional questions for Library patrons.
  10. Assists in finding lost or misplaced books.
  11. Enforces library policies regarding noise, food, and cellphone use.
  12. Assists Library patrons with disabilities as directed by permanent staff members.
  13. Participates in library inventories as needed.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education

Must be enrolled at Ramapo College of NJ.

Experience

  1. Prior library work experience a plus.

Additional Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  1. Knowledge of Library of Congress system helpful.
  2. Good organization and time management skills.
  3. Can be relied on to work independently.
  4. Pays attention to detail.
  5. Able to spend long periods standing, walking, and doing moderate lifting.
  6. Must possess positive attitude, enthusiasm, and desire for helping people.
