Paying It Forward
How One Scholarship Has Exponential Impact
Fall 2025
Ten years after Audrey Newman ’93 first endowed a scholarship to benefit students in the School of Social Science and Human Services (SSHS), one of the recipients, Julio Sarmiento ’23, ’24, became determined to follow Newman’s example. He established a scholarship, and Aaliyah Marte ’25 was the first recipient. The three of them sat down before the 2025 Annual Scholarship Reception, an event honoring scholarship benefactors and the students who receive them, to talk about how their lives have been shaped by this support.
