International Studies (BA)
Requirements of the Major
School of American and International Studies
Convener: Charles Carreras


One course of an international/comparative nature Western content 3 crs.
One course of an international/comparative nature non-Western content 3 crs.
One course in the multicultural nature of American Society 3 crs.
One course in geography 3-4 crs.
Two courses at the 300/400 level in a foreign language* 6 crs.
  Language must be appropriate to Areas Studies option; coursework must receive a grade "C" or higher; course-work assumes the appropriate 100/200 level prerequisite language courses. This requirement may be waived for native speakers or by a third-year foreign language proficiency test – see convener of the International Studies major.
 
Six courses (four of which must be at the 300/400) in one of the following concentrations 18 crs.
  Global Issues Concentration: FIVE courses on global issues with a thematic focus (e.g. development, security, gender, race/ethnic issues, etc.). ONE course in either business, economics, environment or ethics/values with an international/comparative emphasis.
Areas Studies Concentration: FIVE courses in ONE geographical area (e.g. Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America). ONE course in a second geographical area.
 
A 300/400 level course approved by the convener 3-4crs.
Required: An international/multicultural experience such as study abroad, international cooperative education, internship, or service learning.  

  Minimum: 39-41 crs.

PLEASE NOTE:
Courses approved for the categories and concentrations required in the Major are available from the Convener or the School of American and International Studies.

Recommended for the International Studies Major*:
  • Courses offered by visiting foreign scholars.
  • Coursework in quantitative analysis.
  • Third year proficiency in an additional foreign language – especially valuable to students planning a career in international affairs.
*Recommended coursework counted toward Major only upon approval by faculty advisor in the Major.
 
AIS School Core Requirements

AAMR 125 Introduction to American Studies 3 crs.
AINS 127 Introduction to International Studies 3 crs.
AHST 107/108 Introduction to U.S. History I or II 3 crs.
Choose one: AHST 101 Western Studies I
AHST 102 Western Studies II
AHST 110 World Civilizations I
AHST 111 World Civilizations II
4 crs.

  Minimum 13 crs.

NOTE: International Studies as a Second Major requires the following school core, totaling 7 credits.
AINS 127 Introduction to International Studies and
One of the following:
  • AHST 101 Western Studies I
  • AHST 102 Western Studies II
  • AHST 110 World Civilizations I
  • AHST 111 World Civilizations II
