Welcome Week 2017

In preparation for move-in/check-in on Sunday here are a few reminders:

  • There is currently a forecast of rain on Sunday. Due to that possibility please note:
    • Bins will be provided by the College to help move your items from your car to your residence hall room but you may want to bring a tarp or cover to protect any items you don’t want to get wet while transporting.
    • The Barbecue and Carnival will be moved to inside the Scott Student Center.  Lunch will be served in Birch Tree Inn, Student Center 1st Floor and the Carnival will be held in Friends Hall, SC 219.
    • The Arching Ceremony will happen rain or shine so please let your families know that they may want to bring a rain coat or umbrella. Ponchos will be available for students.

  • Resident students are allowed to move-in only at their specified time. You can find your assigned time online at: https://www.ramapo.edu/reslife/move-in-guide/new-student-check-in/
  • Commuter students can check-in between 2:30pm and 4:00pm at the Alumni Lounges, Student Center 1st Floor (signs will be posted to direct you). Parking will be available in D Lot.
  • Be sure to follow @RamapoCollegeNJ on Twitter for updates.

Important Reminders for Welcome Week

  • Students need to have their Student IDs with them at all times. IDs are needed for entrance into the dining halls and will be swiped before entering most events during Welcome Week.
  • Many of the events on the Welcome Week schedule are required and attendance will be taken.
  • Events highlighted with “Arch Event” are key events all students are expected to attend.  Attend all events with this distinction and be entered to win one of 3 – $500 gift cards to the bookstore.
  • Be sure to know your First Year Seminar section number and instructor name in order to identify your meeting space throughout Welcome Week. If you are unsure of your seminar, check your course schedule online.
  • To request disability-related accommodations please call 201.684.7593 once you have reviewed the schedule in its entirety.

Welcome Barbecue and Carnival: 12:00pm-4:30pm

First-Year Students and their families are invited to join the fun with our Welcome Barbecue and Carnival! The Carnival includes fun for all ages including inflatables, games and a free barbecue! If your check-in time is mid to late afternoon and you want to enjoy the barbecue and carnival first, please park across the street near the tennis courts and walk to the Scott Student Center to enjoy the fun!  Families may also register for Family Day during this event.

This interactive workshop for commuter students will address the specific needs and questions of the commuter population.

Panel for Families of Commuter and Transfer Students: 4:00pm-4:45pm 
Location: Sharp Theater, Berrie Center
Families of commuter and transfer students will hear from and can ask questions of Ramapo College staff and other Ramapo parents so you can help your student make a successful transition. Families of residential students are welcome to attend.

Annual New Student Assembly: 5:15pm-6:00pm “Arch Event”
Location: Bill Bradley Center Arena
Students and family members receive an official welcome to Ramapo, including remarks from Dr. Peter P. Mercer, President of Ramapo College; Christopher Romano, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs; Joseph Connell, Assistant Vice President of Student Success; Ramapo College parent representatives Peter and Louise Riccobene and Stephan Lally, Ramapo College SGA President as well as a performance by 4gotten Suitcase.
This event will start promptly at 5:15pm.  Please allow sufficient time to make your way to the Bradley Center.  In the event that the Bill Bradley Center Arena reaches capacity additional seating will be available and staff will direct you.

Annual Arching Ceremony: 6:00pm–7:00pm “Arch Event”
Location: Arch
Join us for this Ramapo College tradition as families line up along Mansion Road to cheer on students as they proceed through the Arch and shake hands with President Mercer. On the eve of graduation, students will march down through the Arch, this time cheered on by faculty and staff to signify the completion of their undergraduate experience. Make sure to bring your camera and a few tissues!
The Arching Ceremony concludes the family portion of the Welcome Week schedule. Students and families should say their goodbyes prior to students heading to dinner.

Show your school spirit at this annual event. Enjoy the rock climbing wall, bring your suit and a towel for the swimming pool, take photos in our photo booth and be sure to stay to the end for your chance to win the grand prize, a 43″ TV. Students will also be introduced to the brand new #weareRCNJ SuperFan app with a chance to start earning points toward prizes! Late night dining will also be available.

Choices and Consequences: This interactive workshop provides you with information that will help you make informed decisions relating to alcohol and its consequences.

Leaders of Tomorrow: Cultural Competency is Ensuring Everyone’s Asked to the Dance: College life opens the door to being exposed to differences on multiple levels.  Ensuring everyone feels valued necessitates developing heightened levels of cultural competence.  This session is designed to have participants reflect on their own cultural lenses as they navigate their campus community.

SCREAM Theater: “Students Challenging Realities and Educating Against Myths.” This peer education group uses improvisational theater to educate about issues of sexual and relationship violence, stalking, and harassment with a focus on bystander intervention and the understanding that the crime of sexual violence is a community issue. SCREAM is designed to model positive bystander intervention and primary prevention.

Students and family members receive an official welcome to Ramapo, including remarks from Dr. Peter P. Mercer, President of Ramapo College; Christopher Romano, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs; Joseph Connell, Assistant Vice President of Student Success; Ramapo College parent representatives Peter and Louise Riccobene and Stephan Lally, Ramapo College SGA President as well as a performance by 4gotten Suitcase.
This event will start promptly at 5:15pm. Please allow sufficient time to make your way to the Bradley Center. In the event that the Bradley Center Arena reaches capacity additional seating will be available and staff will direct you.

Annual Arching Ceremony: 6:00pm–7:00pm “Arch Event”
Location: Arch
Join us for this Ramapo College tradition as families line up along Mansion Road to cheer on students as they proceed through the Arch and shake hands with President Mercer. On the eve of graduation, students will march down through the Arch, this time cheered on by faculty and staff to signify the completion of their undergraduate experience. Make sure to bring your camera and a few tissues!
The Arching Ceremony concludes the family portion of the Welcome Week schedule. Students and families should say their goodbyes prior to students heading to dinner.
