{"id":241,"date":"2017-06-21T10:23:04","date_gmt":"2017-06-21T14:23:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/aod\/?page_id=241"},"modified":"2023-03-14T16:39:51","modified_gmt":"2023-03-14T20:39:51","slug":"your-body-and-alcohol","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/sud\/your-body-and-alcohol\/","title":{"rendered":"Alcohol is a Drug"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Alcohol is the number one drug, and it has immediate effects on your mind and body.<\/h2>\n<p>When one is intoxicated, alcohol interferes with the ability to analyze sensory information, resulting in the symptoms of being drunk, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Slurred speech<\/li>\n<li>Sweating<\/li>\n<li>Loss of judgment<\/li>\n<li>Loss of balance and coordination such as or loss of fine motor skills, staggering, swaying, or inability to walk<\/li>\n<li>Loss of the ability to judge distance and heights<\/li>\n<li>Dizziness<\/li>\n<li>Diminished Senses\n<ul>\n<li>dulled sensation of pain<\/li>\n<li>speaking louder than usual<\/li>\n<li>hearing difficulties<\/li>\n<li>blurred vision<\/li>\n<li>glassy eyes\/dilated pupils<\/li>\n<li>inability to focus<\/li>\n<li>sleepy look, bobbing head<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Slowed mental processing\n<ul>\n<li>can only do one task at a time<\/li>\n<li>forgetting things<\/li>\n<li>losing their train of thought<\/li>\n<li>Difficulties with: listening, following conversations, and\/or understand what others are saying<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Sudden or unexplained mood changes<\/li>\n<li>Intensified emotions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Alcohol is also a diuretic, making one urinate excessively, which speeds up the loss of fluid from the body, causing dehydration. Most of the nasty symptoms of a hangover, including headache, dizziness, thirst, paleness, and tremors\u2014are caused by dehydration. Alternating drinks containing alcohol with a bottle of water can help you avoid the effects of dehydration.<\/p>\n<h2>Physical impacts of alcohol<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Even though someone who has been drinking might look as if they\u2019re in a deep sleep, they will not be getting restorative sleep.<\/li>\n<li>Consuming five or more alcoholic beverages in one night can affect brain and body activities for up to three days.<\/li>\n<li>Two consecutive nights of drinking five or more alcoholic beverages can affect brain and body activities for up to five days.<\/li>\n<li>Attention span is shorter for up to 48 hours after drinking.<\/li>\n<li>Even the effects of small amounts of alcohol (BAC of .03) can persist for a substantial period of time after the acute effects of alcohol impairment disappear.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alcohol is the number one drug, and it has immediate effects on your mind and body.
