{"id":30,"date":"2013-11-01T15:10:39","date_gmt":"2013-11-01T19:10:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/study-abroad\/?page_id=30"},"modified":"2025-09-05T01:28:34","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T05:28:34","slug":"scholarships","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/study-abroad\/scholarships\/","title":{"rendered":"Scholarships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an effort to encourage and make more accessible study abroad, we have prepared the following list of financial resources.<\/p>\n<div class=\"accordions\">\n<div class=\"item\"><p class=\"question\" tabindex=\"0\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-plus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-minus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span> Ramapo College International Academic Programs' Scholarships<\/p><div>\n<p><strong>Ramapo College&#8217;s Roukema Center for International Education Scholarship<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ramapo College&#8217;s Roukema Center for International Education provides scholarships to support international academic programs from our <a href=\"https:\/\/ramapo.studioabroad.com\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.AdvancedSearch\">approved list<\/a> of programs. The number of scholarships awarded per term and award amounts vary according to the strength and number of applicants. Priority is given to Ramapo College Faculty-Led Program participants. Criteria to determine scholarship awards are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Academic\n<ul>\n<li>Undergraduate students must have a minimum of <strong>3.0 cumulative G.P.A., <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Graduate students must have a minimum of<strong> 3.25 G.P.A.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Need\n<ul>\n<li>Determined by a review of your financial aid file, the Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) calculated on your FAFSA, and through the description you provide in your essay<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Leadership\n<ul>\n<li>Determined by your scholarship essay<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><div class=\"infoBox col-sm-12 col-lg-0 \" style=\"float: none; margin: 0 auto;\"><div class=\"boxContent\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ramapo.studioabroad.com\/?go=GeneralScholarship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Apply here<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><\/div><\/div><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/scholarships\/single\/ruth-johnson-international-scholarship-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ruth Johnson International Scholarship<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This fund was created by Dick Johnson in memory of his wife, Ruth. The Johnsons were Mahwah residents for 20 years. Their son Andrew graduated from Ramapo in 1990 with a degree in Literature, then worked in England as an advertising copywriter. \u201cStarting this scholarship was a way to memorialize Ruth and her appreciation of learning,\u201d Mr. Johnson has said. The award benefits students who participate in a cooperative education experience abroad and the recipient is selected by the Director of International Education.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Intended for students participating in an approved, international internship program (minimum 4 weeks)<\/li>\n<li>Recipient selected by the director of International Education<\/li>\n<li>You must be nominated to be considered for this award; there is not an application process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/scholarships\/single\/bright-deirdre-memorial-scholarship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Deirdre Bright Memorial Scholarship<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Colleagues of Assistant Dean of Nursing Dr. Kathy Burke started this scholarship in memory of Dr. Burke\u2019s sister, Deirdre, who passed away in 2021. To honor Deirdre\u2019s 30-year career in the travel industry, this scholarship is intended to help a student with costs associated with a study abroad experience.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Student enrolled in the Nursing program<\/li>\n<li>For study abroad costs<\/li>\n<li>You must be nominated by the Nursing Faculty to be considered for this award; there is not an application process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/scholarships\/single\/hiden-family-college-honors-endowment-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hiden Family College Honors Endowment<\/a> <em>(Honors students only)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Robert B. Hiden Jr. was an active member of the Ramapo College Foundation Board of Governors since 2002.\u00a0 He provided exemplary service to the board as Chairman of the Audit Committee and as a member of the Finance Committee, Investment Committee, Allocations Committee and the Motorcycle Rally Committee. \u00a0He and his wife Ann established the Hiden Family College Endowment to \u201ctangibly recognize the outstanding work done at the College in a way that helps students and hopefully enhances their academic experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During his time as a member of the Board of Governors, Bob witnessed the growth of the College first hand.\u00a0 He demonstrated a commitment to this growth through financial support for unrestricted funds and events, contributions for the Havemeyer Edible Garden, and for science equipment for students.<\/p>\n<p>Professionally, Bob served as senior counsel to Sullivan &amp; Cromwell since he retired in 2000.\u00a0 He had been a partner since 1968, specializing in corporate and securities law, acquisitions, and in commodities and derivatives law.\u00a0 Sadly, Mr. Hiden passed away in February of 2018.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For students in the College Honors Program<\/li>\n<li>For tuition and costs associated with Honors research OR for costs associated with study abroad<\/li>\n<li>Financial need based on Foundation Policy<\/li>\n<li>Full time status<\/li>\n<li>Good academic standing<\/li>\n<li>Essay should address why you are deserving of this scholarship<\/li>\n<li>Apply at the hyperlink above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/scholarships\/single\/century-21-study-abroad-scholarship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Century 21 Study Abroad Scholarship<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Century 21 is one of the top general contracting and construction management firms in New Jersey, as evidenced in projects such as Newark\u2019s Riverfront Stadium and Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. The company has been a generous supporter of the College since 1999, in the area of student scholarships as well as the Distinguished Citizens Dinner and the Ramapo College Foundation Golf Outing. The Marino Meditation Room, located in the Salameno Spiritual Center, is named for the family. In 2016, the College presented Anthony J. Marino, Founder, and CEO, with the Havemeyer Presidential Leadership Award for his generous support and advocacy.<\/p>\n<p>This award was created by Mr. Marino and his family to provide opportunities for Ramapo students to study abroad. (Pictured with Mr. Marino is his daughter Barbara, who also actively supports the College and its programs).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For study abroad costs, minority students preferred<\/li>\n<li>Top priority given to students enrolled in the College Honors Program<\/li>\n<li>Applicants must submit an essay, no more than 500 words, that answers the question: How do you expect your experience abroad will contribute to your academic or creative work?<\/li>\n<li>Applicants are chosen by the College Honors Program Advisory Board and Director of International Education<\/li>\n<li>Apply at the hyperlink above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Frech Scholarship\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/scholarships\/single\/william-sandra-frech-scholarship-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William and Sandra Frech Scholarship Award<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>William Frech, Ph.D. is a retired professor of International Business at Ramapo College and a Fulbright Scholar.\u00a0 Dr. Frech\u2019s teaching interests are the cross cultural aspects of international business and international risk management issues, among others.<\/p>\n<p>He and his wife, Sandra, share the opinion that studying abroad provides students with a valuable insight into other cultures, and gives students first hand experience with different perspectives in any field, from business to art history.\u00a0 Two of the Ramapo College\u2019s four pillars of education are to provide students with an experiential and international education.<\/p>\n<p>In creating the scholarship Dr. Frech said, \u201cMy goal is to have all students have an experience outside of the United States.\u201d\u00a0 Helping students with study abroad expenses demonstrates a dedication to the mission of the College.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ramapo College student participating in a College-approved study abroad program or international internship<\/li>\n<li>Applicant in good academic standing<\/li>\n<li>Applicant selected by a committee including Dr. and Mrs. Frech, the Director of International Education and the Scholarship Coordinator. Apply at the hyperlink above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/scholarships\/single\/williams-madeleine-ehlert-food-nutrition-scholarship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Madeleine Ehlert Williams Food &amp; Nutrition Scholarship<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For Madeleine Ehlert Williams, food was an expression of love when she was growing up. During her university years, she explored food from a multi-faceted perspective.\u00a0 \u201cI took interest in food and culture, therapeutic nutrition, as well as food science and research,\u201d said Ms. Williams, sister-in-law of President Peter P. Gilman International Scholarship<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. Such international study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world. Undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at 2-year or 4-year colleges or universities are eligible to apply.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fundforeducationabroad.org\/scholarships\/\"><strong>Fund for Education Abroad (FEA)<\/strong> <\/a><\/p>\n<p>FEA is an independent organization that is committed to increasing opportunities for dedicated American students to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs by reducing financial restrictions through the provision of scholarships. FEA goals include increasing the number and diversity of students studying abroad, in particular underrepresented students.
