{"id":1796,"date":"2021-06-14T15:57:06","date_gmt":"2021-06-14T19:57:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/social-media\/?page_id=1796"},"modified":"2025-09-11T16:31:03","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T20:31:03","slug":"how-to-post-on-instagram-like-a-pro","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/social-media\/how-to-post-on-instagram-like-a-pro\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Post on Instagram Like a Pro"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>A resource on how to use Instagram for an affiliated account of Ramapo College of New Jersey.<\/h3>\n<p><b>SET YOUR POSTS UP FOR SUCCESS<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Keep content relatable to students, your audience, and the campus itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Each regular post should include: <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A location* such as \u201cRamapo College of New Jersey\u201d<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><em>*When applicable, you can also use the location feature in areas such as the Berrie Center or Bradley Center.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">RCNJ-centric hashtag(s) and general hashtags to help increase your reach\/visibility.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tagged related accounts (if applicable). <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can always tag <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ramapocollegenj\/\">@ramapocollegenj<\/a> in your photos.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Hashtag (#) with a purpose.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s good to use at one RCNJ-branded hashtag per post. More than one hashtag can be used, especially when relevant, but no need to go overboard (more than 15). Five to seven is ok.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you decide to use a \u201cgeneral\u201d hashtag, make sure there is a strategy behind it. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Please refer to the list of College-related hashtags to use, which are on-brand with Ramapo College and will help new followers and current followers to \u201cstumble\u201d on your content. A full list of branded hashtags is available on our Guidelines page: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/social-media\/social-media-guidelines\/\">ramapo.edu\/social-media\/social-media-guidelines\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Let us know if you are considering launching a new hashtag or campaign \u2013 we\u2019d love to help brainstorm, strategize, and offer tips. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not all campaigns need a new hashtag.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Quality over quantity &#8211; We recommend a maximum of one (1) regular post\/Reel per day on Instagram. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our target audiences are very picky and will unfollow accounts that post multiple times a day. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Have several photos to share? <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Consider posting as the multi-photo post (add up to 10 of your best photos for users to swipe through in one post) OR create a photo montage as a video Reel. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you don\u2019t have something of value to post, it\u2019s ok to skip a day or two, or even more.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>TIMING IS KEY<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Promoting an event? Due to Instagram\u2019s algorithms, we recommend not promoting an event (for awareness) a few hours or minutes beforehand as a regular \u201cfeed\u201d post. Post several days beforehand so people have a better chance of seeing it.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can even try the &#8220;reminder&#8221; feature for a Feed post but give people a few days to see it\/plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Need a last-minute or day-before reminder? Post your reminder as a Story and your followers will see your content above their feed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Always make sure to include specific dates, and times avoid confusion.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instagram varies what posts show up in the timeline &#8211; they are not always shown chronologically to your followers. It&#8217;s best to include the actual date in your post.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Don&#8217;t write: \u201ctomorrow at 5 pm&#8221; <\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do write: \u201ctomorrow, September 1 at 5 pm\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>SLEEK POSTS<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Tag multiple accounts in the photo(s) instead of listing the accounts out in the caption. It\u2019s easier to read. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This also provides you with the value of increasing your potential reach. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When you tag an account in your photo, your post will show up on their profile in their &#8220;tagged&#8221; content feed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> You can incorporate hashtags into the sentence(s) of caption or list at the end.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Never include website links in captions for Feed posts or Reels \u2013 since users cannot click on the link. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can share the post\/Reel to your Story and use the Link sticker to send people to a website. You can also ask users to \u201cDM\u201d you for the link or say \u201clink in bio\u201d. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can send a clickable link in a DM. Just copy and paste the link into a direct message to the person asking for it. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you say &#8220;link in bio,&#8221; make sure you have the correct link there. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Remember, you can add up to five (5) links in your Instagram profile&#8217;s bio.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can change the links listed there as many times as you want.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Flyers need to be redesigned for social media use and maintain College branding standards.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We recommend you work with the Office of Marketing to design the social media visuals you\u2019ll need for your posts. Start the process by filling out their job request form with advanced notice: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/project-request\/creative-brief-form\/\">ramapo.edu\/project-request\/creative-brief-form\/<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you must design it on your own, please consult <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/social-media\/graphic-design-tips-for-social-media\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ramapo.edu\/social-media\/graphic-design-tips-for-social-media\/<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for graphic design tips and tricks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Short and sweet is best &#8211; get to the point. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Include the basic info (event title, date, time, location, etc) from the flyer into the visual and then include the more specific info (expanded context, event specifics, etc) in the caption.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is better if you can use a relevant real photo instead of a designed visual; any important info can go in the caption. This will make your post more engaging and ensure accessibility standards are met (please see the <\/span><b>ACCESSIBILITY<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> section).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>PHOTOGRAPHY AND SOURCING PHOTOS<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The core of Instagram is about sharing great, engaging photography\/videography and \u201cthumb-stopping\u201d content. You want people to stop scrolling when they come across your content. Use real photos in your posts. It is best to brainstorm photos that can be evergreen for your posts and then build a photo bank to use year-round.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Take photos on smart devices or request photography coverage from the Office of Marketing, but please do so with advanced notice: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/project-request\/creative-brief-form\/\">ramapo.edu\/project-request\/creative-brief-form\/<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Work your network! You can always source user-generated content (UGC) by asking your followers (students, employees, staff, faculty) to provide you with photos. Just be mindful of providing guidelines so that you receive photos that are appropriate for your account\/department\/club, and are of good quality (not blurry\/pixelated).<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We can provide sample guidelines for you if needed. Just ask!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>INSTAGRAM STORIES<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Instagram Stories promote engagement. You can use different tools to pose questions and gather answers, ask a poll, use fun animated gifs and additional sticker options.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Use the link sticker to send people to websites instead of adding a link in the text sticker.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Search keywords such as \u201cRCNJ\u201d or \u201cramapocollege\u201d or \u201cRamapo\u201d on the sticker page to use College-specific gifs and stickers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Stories are useful to utilize when information may not be appropriate or successful as a feed post on your page. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For example, if you want to post about an upcoming club meeting, it may not be a valuable feed post but it\u2019s a helpful reminder as a Story post. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Story is also useful when you have multiple things to post about in one day. By using the story feature, you don\u2019t over-post your feed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Stories only last 24 hours, so be smart about what you post!<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>If you want to make them live longer, add them to a Highlight so they stay on your profile &#8211;\u00a0 you can create different Highlights to &#8220;save&#8221; different themed-Stories or topics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>NEW CAMPAIGNS\/IDEAS<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> New ideas are great, and it is important to keep up with appropriate trends to promote follower engagement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> When you have a new idea, it is important to meet with the Social Media Strategist and the Social Media Team to ensure success, and to keep us in the loop.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> We highly recommend regularly attending the Social Media Group meetings. As a group, we discuss different topics related to social media, brand guidelines, the latest platform updates, and best practices. For more info or to be added to the email list, visit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/social-media\/social-media-group\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ramapo.edu\/social-media\/social-media-group\/<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>PROFILE TIPS<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Your profile is the centerpiece of your Instagram strategy. Make sure your bio has the most relevant, up-to-date information that all of your followers need to know (office location, contact information, etc).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Tag @ramapocollegenj in your bio to connect your followers with the College account.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Make sure to add a webpage. You can link to your ramapo.edu page, an Archway account, event sign-up website, etc. Tell your followers to use the \u201clink in bio\u201d for more info when posting in the Feed. If you decide to utilize a link in your bio, make sure that the link is updated and maintained.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Use a profile photo that is relevant and tells your followers who you are. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We recommend working with the Office of Marketing for assistance with profile icon design and branding standards. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/project-request\/creative-brief-form\/\">ramapo.edu\/project-request\/creative-brief-form\/<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>ACCESSIBILITY<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Being accessible means that anyone, regardless of ability, can access and engage with your content.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Utilize the Alternative Text (alt text) feature to allow those with visual impairments to utilize screen readers and access your content (it\u2019s also known as an image description, and not to be confused with a caption).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be descriptive but concise when writing alt text so that your followers can be as engaged as possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Utilize Camel Case for hashtags with multiple words to make them easier to read and accessible for screen readers.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For example: Use #RamapoCollege and not #ramapocollege<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other examples: Use #RamapoAlumni, #WeAreRCNJ, #HomeSweetPo<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Add captions to videos that have people speaking (whether on-screen or voice overs). You can add captions in Instagram and TikTok that are editable (make sure &#8220;Ramapo&#8221; is spelled correctly and people&#8217;s names!).
