The Student Government Association&#8217;s Sustainability Committee has put together the following to help students, faculty and staff, as well as their families practice more mindful living in these trying times.<\/p>\n<div class=\"accordions\">\n<div class=\"item\"><p class=\"question\" tabindex=\"0\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-plus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-minus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span> Waste Reduction<\/p><div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Check your municipalities recycling guidelines;<\/strong> recycling varies by location.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Be conscious when purchasing<\/strong> \u2013 How was it made? What is it made of? How long will it last? How will it be reused, donated, recycled or disposed?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Donate, give away, gift, etc.<\/strong> unused items in your household instead of throwing them away; there is no away, items have to go somewhere&#8230;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Use public resources<\/strong>, such as the library, to get books and movies instead of buying them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Avoid single-use items.<\/strong> Carry your own set of reusable utensils, reusable water bottle, cloth napkins, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Don\u2019t leave the water running<\/strong> when you are not actively using it.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Recycling Reminders and Tips<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Look for special recycling programs (razors, plastic film, makeup, etc.) in your community.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sign up for free special recycling programs through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terracycle.com\/en-US\/brigades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TerraCycle\u00ae<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Set up a recycling bin in your home so that you do not have to sort through your trash for recycled goods.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"item\"><p class=\"question\" tabindex=\"0\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-plus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-minus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span> Saving Paper<\/p><div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Avoiding printing as whenever possible.<\/strong> W<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hen you must print, use functions such as double-sided printing, eco-mode, or print in black &amp; white only.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Purchase recycled paper<\/strong> made from post-consumer waste.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Use scrap paper<\/strong> or old\/leftover notebooks and journals for notes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If possible, take notes on an electronic device.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>For zero waste school supplies, we recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisdomsupplyco.com\/\">Wisdom Supply Co.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"item\"><p class=\"question\" tabindex=\"0\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-plus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-minus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span> Saving Energy<\/p><div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Weatherize your home.<\/strong> Use the subsidies and incentives available to you to improve the energy efficiency of your house.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bundle up in the winter. <\/strong>Wear sweaters indoors, to use less heat.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Set your thermostat to an efficient temperature\/cycle<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Use fans instead of air conditioning.<\/strong> As much as you can, use less air conditioning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unplug all any appliance not in use<\/strong>. Simply turning appliances \u201coff\u201d does not stop power use; they should be unplugged.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Use natural light from a window<\/strong> instead of turning the lights on<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Turn off any lights<\/strong> when you leave a room or office<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"item\"><p class=\"question\" tabindex=\"0\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-plus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-minus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span> Reducing Kitchen Waste &amp; Food Miles<\/p><div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Eat Less Meat.<\/strong> Of all the foods, meat has the highest ecological footprint. The less meat you eat, the better off you leave the planet.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eat Seasonal. <\/strong>Out-of-season foods usually come from far-away places and have larger food miles attached to them. Whenever you can, buy from Farmers Markets, or join a CSA (Community Support Agriculture) in your area. This is a good way to ensure you are eating both locally and seasonally.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grow something.<\/strong> Try to grow at least some of your food\u2014even if it\u2019s just herbs.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eliminate single-use utensils, paper towels, plastic bags and other commonly used items. Opt for reusable items instead.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Compost<\/strong> food scraps. Food waste which ends up in a landfill releases methane gas which is 23x more potent than carbon dioxide, contributing further to the warming of our planet. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/recycle\/composting-home\">Learn how to compost at home.<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Cook instead of ordering food.<\/strong> If ordering out, request your food to not come in Styrofoam.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use leftover fruit and vegetable scraps in smoothies, sauces and soups.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Repurpose glass containers and jars.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"item\"><p class=\"question\" tabindex=\"0\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-plus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-minus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span> Reducing Bathroom Waste<\/p><div>\n<ul>\n<li>Purchase recycled toilet paper or invest in a bidet.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use reusable cotton rounds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>DIY face masks or cleansers, or use a facial cleansing bar.<\/li>\n<li>Use shampoo and conditioning bars.<\/li>\n<li>Use a menstrual cup or reusable pads.<\/li>\n<li>Take shorter showers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"item\"><p class=\"question\" tabindex=\"0\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-plus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-minus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span> Travel<\/p><div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Opt to walk or bike, instead of taking the car, to travel locally.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use public transportation whenever possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Use stairs rather than elevators when physically able.<\/li>\n<li>Do not use automatic entry\/exit doors unless physically necessary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Resources<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegoodtrade.com\/\">The Good Trade<\/a> is a premier resource for sustainable fashion and lifestyle content, annually reaching 50M highly-engaged readers across web, newsletter, &amp; social.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Much of the college is operating remotely, which has resulted in a shift in lifestyles.
