How we purchase and how we dispose of items can directly impact our local environment, so here are some suggestions to minimize and avoid waste while hosting events.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<div id=\"tabs\"><a href=\"#\" title=\"View Purchasing Tab\" rel=\"t2034745102\" class=\"active\"><span>Purchasing<\/span><\/a><a href=\"#\" title=\"View Food Service Tab\" rel=\"t2034745103\"><span>Food Service<\/span><\/a><a href=\"#\" title=\"View Diversion Tab\" rel=\"t2034745104\"><span>Diversion<\/span><\/a><\/div><div id=\"tab-content\"><div class=\"wrapper\"><div id=\"t2034745102\" title=\"Purchasing\" class=\"content active\" tabindex=\"0\">\n<h3><strong>WASTE REDUCTION STARTS WITH PURCHASING CONSCIOUSLY<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Seek out products and services with <strong>reduced effects on human health, society and the environment<\/strong>, when compared with other options of the same function.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<h4>BEFORE BUYING, ASK YOURSELF:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Is this product or service absolutely necessary?<\/li>\n<li>Can we borrow, share it with others, or buy secondhand to reduce costs and impacts?<\/li>\n<li>What is this product made of?<\/li>\n<li>How, where and by whom was this product made?<\/li>\n<li>How long will this product last?<\/li>\n<li>How will it be packaged and delivered?<\/li>\n<li>Can we buy in bulk to reduce packaging and number of shipments?<\/li>\n<li>What courier are we using, and do they embrace sustainable practices?<\/li>\n<li>How will it be reused, recycled or disposed?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Asking these questions are not only critical to our campus&#8217; sustainability mission, but are important for local environments, too.<\/strong><sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1033 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/ramapo-green\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2020\/11\/Screen-Shot-2020-11-07-at-7.15.18-PM-300x188.png\" alt=\"A hierarchy. Some options:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask for reusable items which can be picked up or returned after the event, and\/or<\/li>\n<li>Have your club, organization, or overseeing department buy reusable items, which can be your own or shared with other event holders, and\/or<\/li>\n<li>Host events in spaces with reusable items or ask your volunteers to assist in reduced waste clean-up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consider\u00a0refusing\u00a0the single use serving utensils that are delivered\u00a0with the catered food. Plan ahead and bring reusable utensils to use instead of producing unnecessary waste.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Some materials have natural antimicrobial properties (e.g., bamboo)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wash out aluminum catering dishes before recycling them; they <em>cannot <\/em>be recycled if they are food soiled.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Consider food options that don\u2019t require utensils (e.g., pizza, sandwiches, etc.)<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>If this is not possible, encourage attendees to bring their own utensils (forks, knives, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Order platters instead of individually packaged items and order in bulk when possible.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>If single-use items are absolutely necessary, ask or request that your caterer use items made of recycled or renewable materials.
