Important Update Regarding Pass/Fail Grading Option

TO:        All Students

FROM:  Susan Gaulden, Interim Provost

Dear RCNJ Students,

Due to the unprecedented disruption to the Spring 2020 semester and the transition to remote coursework delivery caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic, Ramapo College has approved the adoption of an emergency Spring 2020 Pass/Fail Grading Option Policy and related Procedures. It is my hope that having this Spring 2020 pass/fail (P/F) grading option will reassure you and help alleviate some of the stress you may be experiencing due to the unforeseen and unavoidable disruption caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic this semester.

I appreciate the patience you exhibited while the details of the policy and procedures were being worked out. It took a short while to thoroughly investigate all possible consequences of adopting a P/F grading option, which was necessary to avoid unintended negative consequences in doing so. While our primary concern is the health and safety of all Ramapo community members, we are fully committed to ensuring that our students can continue to make academic progress and stay on track to achieve their academic goals and ultimately graduate from Ramapo College.

Grading options that are available to Ramapo undergraduate and graduate students for classes taken in the Spring 2020 semester are presented in detail here. You are strongly encouraged to consult with your professors, adviser, school Dean, the Office of Financial Aid, and others before making your decision to opt into P/F grading mode for one, several, or all of your eligible Spring 2020 classes.

The time frame for opting into P/F grading begins on April 10, 2020 and ends on May 26, 2020 at 11:59pm.  Important Note: May 26, 2020 is one week after the Spring 2020 letter grades are viewable to students. For this reason, we highly recommend that you take your time to opt into P/F grading – you can wait to see your letter grades and then decide to opt into P/F grading mode up to one week after the letter grades are posted, but you cannot reverse your decision once it is made. (Requests for official transcripts will be filled after grades are automatically updated to Ps and Fs for students who opt into P/F grading.)

Please be aware that letter grades will be awarded for any Spring 2020 classes that are ineligible for P/F grading and for any classes for which you do not opt into P/F grading mode. Instructions on how exactly to opt into P/F grading mode, which requires the completion of a Qualtrics form, will be sent to all students at your email addresses no later than April 10, 2020, so please check your Ramapo email regularly.

In closing, please know that our thoughts are with you and we are here to support you. You will be receiving later this week an email that contains a link to a status-check Qualtrics survey, the purpose of which is to determine how things are going with remote coursework delivery/remote learning, remote delivery of student services, and more. We ask for your valuable response by April 10, 2020, which will be used to improve operations at the College during these challenging times.

I wish continued health and safety to you and your loved ones.
