“Communicating Mindfully”- Half Day Retreat with Catherine Krame and Kailen Krame

September 21 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

For MBSR grads or others with a regular meditation practice

Have you ever been frustrated while communicating with others because you felt you were not being heard? Or, have you found yourself interrupting someone else before they have finished speaking? In today’s fast paced and quick-fix society, we rarely take the time to actually listen to each other. Rather than being fully present in our communications, we often are mentally preparing our responses while another is speaking. This can be especially true when faced with difficult conversations, where we may interject with the desire to “fix” things, or try to take control of the dialogue simply to be “right.” Additionally, social conditioning prompts many of us to feel uncomfortable with silence, causing us to speak without much intention or purpose behind our words. With all of these nuances surrounding communication, we fail to realize that simply being fully present and listening to another person is the greatest gift we can give.

Using mindfulness practices and mindful listening exercises, we will explore what it means to communicate mindfully and practice tools that we can utilize in our interactions with others in our daily lives. We will also explore the six points of mindful speech as a means of identifying patterns. Once we have established the foundation for mindful communication, we will then learn how to navigate difficult conversations using the Nonviolent Communication model. By becoming aware of how we communicate with others, we can begin to improve our inter-personal skills and enhance our relationships.
