\"\"The MALS program was the first graduate program at Ramapo College.\u00a0 It began in January 1995 with twenty-six students, after 5 years of planning and with a focus on interdisciplinarity\u00a0 the liberal arts. Those who have served as Directors are: Dr. Sydney Weinberg (1995–2002), Dr. Mark Howenstein (2003–2004), Dr. Anthony T. Padovano (2004–present).<\/p>\n

A massive review of the graduate program was undertaken a decade after its inception by the current Director. Deans, directors, faculty and administrators were interviewed; interrogatories were sent to every graduate, all current students and all faculty who have taught in the program. The effort to create a new structure was influenced by the insights and suggestions that this comprehensive survey produced.<\/p>\n

This restructuring resulted in a program that suits the individual educational needs of its students, with more flexibility and sharper focus. The original four core courses were reduced the three, allowing one additional elective.\u00a0 A thesis became obligatory for all graduates. These three requirements (core courses, electives, thesis) call for different learning responses. A Credential of Concentration feature was added for students who complete 40% of the program in a specific area.<\/p>\n

Each student makes a public presentation of the thesis at a MALS reception held each semester.<\/p>\n

MALS students are encouraged to submit papers for consideration at academic conferences and a number have been accepted. MALS students have also had their papers for published in the MALS national journal, Confluence<\/em>. In June, 2010, the first MALS National Conference was held at Georgetown University, with two MALS students from Ramapo College delivering academic papers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
