By David Terdiman <\/span>\u00a0|\u00a0 Spring 2025<\/em><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.18.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n Susan Geltman \u201992 began her academic journey as a night student at Bergen Community College. When a professor asked about her plans after earning her associate\u2019s degree in social work, she was uncertain. The professor encouraged her to consider Ramapo College, which led her to connect with Professor Mitch Kahn.<\/p>\n Geltman enrolled in Ramapo\u2019s undergraduate social work program as part of a cohort of returning adult students. \u201cIt was a wonderful experience\u2026 scary, but wonderful,\u201d she said. She developed close relationships with Professors Kahn, Sue Scher and Martha Ecker through the program.<\/p>\n After earning her Bachelor of Social Work from Ramapo, Geltman pursued a Master of Social Work at New York University. She later returned to Ramapo for substance abuse training. Once again, Kahn encouraged her to take the next step\u2014teaching. She recalled how she and her colleagues would visit a student\u2019s residence hall to check on them if a student expressed concerns. \u201cWhat college does that? Ramapo does. That\u2019s devotion and that\u2019s caring,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n After retiring in 2012, Geltman wanted to remain connected to Ramapo students. She and Gerry combined their interests to create the Geltman Art Fund, a scholarship that helps students purchase essential art materials for their coursework.<\/p>\n \u201cEducation is critical to me,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m so very fortunate, and the best way to show gratitude is to do something for someone else. It\u2019s a matter of doing a little something. If everyone does that, it makes a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n Geltman named the Ramapo College Foundation as a life insurance policy beneficiary to ensure the fund’s continued operation.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was the easiest vehicle to reach for,\u201d she said. \u201cHaving retired\u2014now without a salary\u2014I can’t think about the fund’s long-term future the same way. However, donating the proceeds from the policy is an easy way to support Ramapo without affecting my finances today.
