Gumpert Teachers’ Workshop–The Exploitation of Women in Genocide: How to Bring a Delicate Subject into the Classroom

May 17, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

In the light of the many accounts of sexual vulnerability, abuse and rape that occurred during the genocides in Darfur, Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, we have come to accept that sexual violence is an intrinsic feature of genocide. No longer is the issue a taboo. Survivors, witnesses, and scholars have become less reticent to discuss the horrors of the past, including the Holocaust and the Armenian Genocide. However, discussing the subject with high school age students is a matter that requires some delicacy and preparation. Our workshop aims to provide both.

Dr. Myrna Goldenberg, with Amy H. Shapiro the author of Different Horrors, Same Hell: Gender and the Holocaust. will deliver the keynote lecture. Dr. Jane Denny, formerly the Education Director of the Holocaust, Genocide and Human Rights Education Center at Brookdale Community, will guide participants on how to convey the subject to their students.
