According to the World Health Organization,\u00a0Emergency contraception (EC) can prevent up to over 95% of pregnancies when taken correctly.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency Contraceptive Types:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>A pill with Levonorgestrel:<\/i><\/b><i>\u00a0Brand names include Plan B, My Way, EContra, and others. These are available over the counter.\u00a0 This must be taken within 72 hours from intercourse to be effective.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><b><i>A pill with Ulipristal:<\/i><\/b><i>\u00a0ella is the only brand and is available only by prescription.\u00a0 This must be taken within 120 hours from intercourse to be effective.\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/li>\n<li><b><i>An IUD:<\/i><\/b><i>\u00a0A copper IUD is the most effective form of emergency contraception if placed within 5 days of intercourse. \u00a0 This can be done at a\u00a0<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/health-center\"><i>Planned Parenthood<\/i><\/a><i>\u00a0or through a local community gynecological provider.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/online-tools\/emergency-contraception\">\u00a0Take this quiz to see which emergency contraceptive is best for you<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Here are some things to consider when choosing an emergency contraceptive pill:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Effectiveness:<\/b>\u00a0<i>ella\u00a0<\/i>is more effective than progestin-only emergency contraceptive (EContra,\u00a0<i>Plan B One-Step<\/i>), particularly on the 5th day after sex.<\/li>\n<li><b>Your body weight:\u00a0<\/b>There is evidence that progestin-only emergency contraception ( EContra,\u00a0<i>Plan B One-Step<\/i>) may be less likely to work for those with a body mass index of 26 or more. If you weigh more than 165lbs, you may want to consider using <i>ella<\/i>\u00a0or a copper IUD\u00a0<i>.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><b>Timing since unprotected sex:<\/b>\u00a0Sperm can live in the body for 5 days after sex. Research shows that\u00a0<i>ella\u00a0<\/i>is effective up to 5 days after unprotected sex, while progestin-only emergency contraception (EContra,\u00a0<i>Plan B One-Step)<\/i>\u00a0may be effective only through the 4th day. If it has been 4 or 5 days since you had unprotected sex, try to make an extra effort to get a prescription for\u00a0<i>ella<\/i>\u00a0or a copper IUD.<\/li>\n<li><b>Your cycle<\/b>: Although studies show that emergency contraception can work up to 120 hours after sex, what matters for each individual person is where you are in your menstrual cycle.\u00a0<i>ella<\/i>\u00a0works closer to the time of ovulation than progestin-only emergency contraception (although most likely neither will work if you have already ovulated). If you think you might be close to ovulation, or don\u2019t know where you are in your cycle,\u00a0<i>ella<\/i>\u00a0may be the best choice. If you can\u2019t get a prescription for\u00a0<i>ella\u00a0<\/i>in time, but you can get to the pharmacy, it\u2019s still a good idea to get progestin-only emergency contraception over-the-counter and take it as soon as possible.<\/li>\n<li><b>The calendar:<\/b>\u00a0If it is a weekend or holiday, your best option may be to get\u00a0<i>Plan B One-Step\u00a0<\/i>from the pharmacy, as Health Services is not open or a health care provider\u2019s office may not be open to provide you with a prescription for\u00a0<i>ella<\/i>.<\/li>\n<li><b>Availability:<\/b>\u00a0Not all pharmacies carry emergency contraception. Call ahead to find out which brands your pharmacy has in stock. Some pharmacies still do not stock\u00a0<i>ella<\/i>, so you may find it easier to get progestin-only emergency contraception.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have had unprotected sex,\u00a0<b>take action right away<\/b>\u00a0and find out what your options are. If you are sexually active, it\u2019s always a good idea to have emergency contraception available in case you need it.
