RCNJ Terms and Definitions

Contact Tracing: Contact tracing has been used for decades by state and local health departments to slow or stop the spread of infectious diseases. Contact tracing slows the spread of COVID-19 by: letting people know they may have been exposed to COVID-19 and should monitor their health for signs and symptoms of COVID-19; helping people who may have been exposed to COVID-19 get tested; asking people to self-isolate if they have COVID-19 or self-quarantine if they are a close contact of someone with COVID-19. The College assembles an internal Contact Tracing Unit to conduct contact tracing for any students or employees who test positive for COVID-19. The Contact Tracing Unit partners closely with the local health department for case investigation and contact tracing. All students and employees are expected to cooperate and be truthful in their responses to the Contact Tracing Unit personnel (Source: CDC).

Close Contact: A close contact is defined as someone who was within 6 feet of an infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period starting from 2 days before illness onset (or, for asymptomatic patients, 2 days prior to test specimen collection) until the time the patient is isolated. As per the local health department, the correct and consistent use of a proper face covering indoors may mean that a person is not considered a close contact to a case (Sources: CDC & Northwest Region Bergen Health Commission).

On-Campus Isolation/Quarantine: An individual may be using an on-campus isolation/quarantine space because:

  1. They have tested positive for COVID-19;
  2. Are identified as a Close Contact of someone who tested positive for COVID-19;
  3. Have traveled internationally or to any of the States listed on NJ’s travel advisory

On-Campus positive cases: Individuals tested positive for COVID-19 who:

  • live on campus,
  • work on campus, or
  • spent significant time on campus during the time they are believed to have been infectious.

Off-Campus positive cases: Individuals tested positive for COVID-19 who:

  • do not live on campus,
  • work on campus but were not on campus for a significant amount of time when they are believed to have been infectious,
  • may not have been on campus at all (studying or working completely remotely), or
  • have never been to campus (new students)

Isolation: Separates and restricts the movement of sick people so they cannot spread disease to healthy people. Isolation is for people who are already sick. (Source: NJ Department of Health)

Quarantine: Quarantined people may or may not become sick.  Quarantine is for people who are not sick, but may have been exposed (Source: NJ Department of Health)

Asymptomatic testing:  Some individuals may be carriers of COVID-19, but not show any symptoms or signs of sickness.  The College has an asymptomatic, surveillance testing program for students and faculty/staff who are unvaccinated.   The College also requires entry testing for residents to show evidence of a negative COVID-19 test prior to moving into residence.  Both of the aforesaid strategies are intended to detect cases early and be proactive to contain the spread of COVID-19 on campus.

Symptomatic testing:  Individuals showing symptoms consistent with COVID-19 are referred to seek a COVID-19 test.  At present, symptomatic testing is not available on campus.  The College refers individuals to a number of community providers found here: https://www.ramapo.edu/health/coronavirus-covid-19/if-you-feel-sick/.
