Coronavirus Campus Communication 5/6/2020 – Official Message from the Office of the President
Dear Students, Colleagues, and Friends,
I hope that you and your family are safe, healthy and adjusting to the myriad ways that COVID-19 has disrupted our lives and educational experiences this spring.
Governor Murphy announced today Executive Order #135 today which extends the State’s public-health emergency for an additional 30 days. In light of this EO and in consideration of State mandates regarding K-12 education, Ramapo College will maintain remote operations minimally through to June 30, 2020.
Thanks to the hard work of our faculty and staff, Ramapo made a rapid and relatively smooth transition to a remote learning environment this semester. Our students’ willingness to adapt to new ways of learning and various instructional technologies has shown their resilience and dedication to their academic pursuits.
We must now turn our attention to restoring Ramapo’s on-campus educational experience. Conditions permitting, I want us all to be together on campus come September. Students, your understanding and nimbleness continue to be instrumental to our efforts to return to campus. Colleagues, your continued commitment to delivering the best possible education to our students consistent with nurturing the health and well-being of our College and wider community remains vital. Together, we have overcome significant challenges and, together, we will continue to do so.
It appears that efforts across the tristate area to stem the spread of COVID-19 are beginning to pay off. New Jersey and our surrounding states have begun to “flatten the curve” and provide us with some reassurance that our vigilance, together with our compassion and concern for others, may now be accompanied by cautious optimism.
Ramapo’s Return-to-Campus Task Force
In the spirit of such optimism, I am announcing the establishment of the Ramapo Return-to-Campus Task Force. The Task Force, building on the hard work of our Pandemic Assessment Team, will be led by Susan Gaulden, Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Virginia Galdieri, Assistant Vice President for Human Resources and Employee Relations. It will work with units and stakeholders across the College to identify and implement the critical actions that must occur in order for the College to: (1) return to work on-campus, (2) return to in-person learning, (3) return to on-campus residential/activity operations, and (4) if needed, adjust to a hybrid learning and/or operational environment.
The Ramapo Return-to-Campus Task Force is planning for a number of scenarios. Each scenario will address new rules and practices as directed by Governor Murphy’s Road Back, which asserts that our State must sustain reductions in hospitalizations, expand testing capacity, implement contact tracing protocols, secure spaces for isolation and quarantine, plan for return to work and economic activities, and create a blueprint for state-wide resiliency. Our College has a responsibility to our State to advance these efforts just as we have a responsibility to one another to adapt this framework and others into our return-to-campus efforts.
I thank you for your continued patience as we adjust. Our hope is that we take the new technologies we have engaged with and skills we have learned and incorporate these into our future. We have an opportunity to create a better campus for all. #WeAreRCNJ
