In The Reverse Centaur’s Guide to Life After AI, Cory Doctorow—who actively uses AI himself—moves past reflexive anti-tech rhetoric to examine who the technology truly serves. He argues that the overwhelming hype surrounding AI is driven by a desperate tech industry attempting to justify a wildly inflated $16 trillion valuation, which inherently relies on replacing vast swathes of the human workforce. Rather than succumbing to narratives of inevitable disruption or robot apocalypses, Doctorow exposes how this massive investment bubble threatens the global economy and turns workers into overworked “reverse centaurs.” Ultimately, he provides a roadmap for navigating this crisis so society can reach a future where digital tools serve humanity rather than exploit it.

FIRST MONDAY OF THE MONTH COMMON HOUR TEACHING CIRCLE (9/14, 10/5, 11/2, 12/7 1:00-2:00pm, location: Adler Center 202): Email FRC Director, Rikki Abzug to reserve your free copy of the book and come to AC202 on Monday, September 14th, 1:00pm to partake in the conversation!

Over the past decade, American colleges and universities have seen enrollment decline, campuses close, programs cut, faculty and staff laid off, and public confidence erode. He maps out how these forces, if left unchecked, could continue to reshape academia by shrinking its footprint, narrowing its mission, and jeopardizing its role in addressing the planet’s most pressing challenges. Educators at all levels have been swept into a net of entangling questions regarding the integration of AI into the college environment in general, the classroom in particular, and life in toto. Educators are being encouraged to incorporate AI into their teaching, and so we are asking ourselves critical questions, among them: To teach, or not to teach, with AI? Is there any way one can keep AI out of student work? What are the ethical ramifications for the utilization of AI, ranging from environmental, academic, and interpersonal impact? In this talk, Dr. Maya Poran re-centers the ethical conversation through a psychological and a mental health lens, proposing that the integration of AI into our classrooms may unwittingly contribute to the mental health decline we are seeing in young people. She further proposes that student well-being and mental health needs to be at the forefront; the primary ethical lens we must consider before moving toward AI integration. Dr. Poran (a tech-free classroom advocate and practitioner) will further share her informed pedagogical choices and the classroom strategies she utilizes to guide students into mastery and ownership of their learning, not only for their academic success, but for their overall health as human beings.
