Start your training to become a nationally certified personal trainer in one weekend!
Ramapo College is pleased to host the Personal Training Institute of America on campus at the Bradley Sports and Recreation Center to prepare enrollees for successful careers as Certified Personal Trainers.
As the number of Americans who recognize the impact that physical fitness has on their individual long-term health continues to grow, the need for individuals who have the ability to instruct others in personal training and fitness is also rising.
Once you become certified as a fitness professional, you aren’t just limited to personal training in a gym or health club or home setting. You may also choose to work on Cruise Ships, at Spas or Resorts, or in the Corporate sector.
How Long Will it Take?
The intensive program on the Ramapo College campus includes more than 16 hours of lecture, demonstrations, and practical hands-on application. There are no prerequisites to participate in this program. Your initial certification is for 2 years. During that time, you are required to keep current with your training and build upon what you learned during certification.

*Plan to bring an exercise mat and pack a lunch, snacks and beverages in a temperature-controlled container as only a limited amount of time is allotted for meal breaks.
Additional Personal Trainer Requirements:
Online final exam is taken after the weekend intensive is complete.
CPR certification is required to be obtained before certification is given. CPR Certification programs may be taken at Ramapo (sign up online at https://www.ramapo.edu/cipl/cpr/) or elsewhere.
10-Hour Internship/Shadowing period is also required for final certification by PTIA so you can see how other trainers work and interact with their clients. These hours are quite flexible and can be fulfilled through a combination of shadowing a trainer and taking group fitness classes at a local facility.
Continuing education credits (CEC) equivalent to 10 hours per two year period is required to maintain your certification. This ensures that you stay on the cutting-edge of this fast paced industry. CEC’s may be granted for lectures, workshops and conferences sponsored by hospitals, colleges, universities, health clubs and other certifying organizations or speakers. Verification of all credits must be made yearly to PTIA to maintain certification.

All PTIA instructors have many years of real world experience and multiple fitness certifications including: Certified Personal Trainers, Yoga Instructors, Nutritional Consultants, Mat & Equipment Pilate, Group Fitness Instructors, Senior Fitness Instructors, Spin Instructors, Arthritis Foundation Instructors, CPR/AED Instructors and more.
Tuition for the Personal Training Institute of America (PTIA) Personal Trainer Certificate is $569 for non-Ramapo College affiliates. Tuition for Ramapo College affiliates (alumni, employees, students) is $519 (a savings of $50). Registration and tuition payment are completed online via the Website.
Textbook & materials fees, to be paid by the enrollees by check or cash only on the first day of class, is $65.00.
Tuition for the Personal Training Institute of America (PTIA) Integrating Pilates into Your Personal Training is $179 for non-Ramapo College affiliates. Tuition for Ramapo College affiliates (alumni, employees, students) is $160 (a savings of $19). Registration and tuition payment are completed online via the Website.
Refunds for withdrawals requested by the Monday of the week prior to the first class are issued at 100%, only when notification is submitted in writing to the Center for Innovative and Professional Learning at email@example.com. Refunds for withdrawals submitted in writing by the Friday of the week prior to the first class are issued at 50% and a $50 processing fee applies. No withdrawal refunds are given after Friday of the week prior to the first Saturday class. No exceptions.
Ramapo College reserves the right to cancel any module/course due to limited enrollment, lack of facilities or unanticipated unavailability of faculty. Full tuition will be fully refunded when a module/course is cancelled.
There is a $25 returned check fee.
A Personal Trainer Certificate noting completion of the PTIA certificate requirements is provided at the successful conclusion of the program by PTIA.
PTIA reserves the right to substitute instructors if necessary.
Ramapo College reserves the right to substitute facilities if necessary (such as using The Lodge Fitness Center).
Parking passes are sent via email prior to the first day of class and must be displayed to avoid a ticket.
