According to the American Heart Association, AED is included in the CPR Course based on science in the 2010 AHA Guidelines for CPR & ECC which indicates that the chance of survival from sudden cardiac arrest is greater when high-quality CPR includes use of an AED. Since AEDs are becoming more and more widely available in public and workplace settings, there is an increased need to educate people on how to use an AED.

Frequently Asked Quesions

Q: What is CPR?
“Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation” – An emergency medical procedure in which the heart and lungs are made to work by compressing the chest over the heart which forces air into the lungs. CPR is used to maintain circulation when the heart has stopped pumping on its own until the heart can be reactivated.

Q: What is AED?
“Automated External Defibrillator” – An AED is a portable defibrillator designed to be automated such that it can be used by persons without substantial medical training who are responding to a cardiac emergency. A defibrillator is an apparatus used to produce defibrillation by application of brief electroshock to the heart, directly or through electrodes placed on the chest wall.

Q: Why is AED training included in all your CPR courses?
The official 2010 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC (Emergency Cardiovascular Care) shows that victims have a greater chance of survival from cardiac arrest when CPR includes use of an AED.

Q: I am not a healthcare professional and I need a CPR and AED course for work purposes. Which course should I take?
“Heartsaver® CPR/AED Certification” is probably best for you.

Q: Which CPR course should a “first responder” or “professional rescuer” take?
First responders or professional rescuers generally include fire, police and emergency medical personnel. These professionals usually need to complete a BLS (Basic Life Support) course, part of the “CPR Basic Life Support Certification” course offered through Ramapo College.

Q: I am a personal trainer. Should I have CPR Certification?
The Personal Training Institute of America (PTIA) Personal Trainer Certification program offered through Ramapo College requires current CPR Certification to complete the PTIA certificate. Also, NJ law requires that health clubs have an AED available, and that at least one person on staff is CPR/AED Certified. So, if you are training in a health facility, you should consider being certified (NJ legislation #S-2567 of 2004-05).

Q: What should I wear to class?
Our CPR and first aid courses involve hands-on practice sessions, including practicing with mannequins on the floor, so wear something comfortable that you can move around in. If you have long hair, it is best to wear it back.

Q: When do I need to renew my course completion card?
Course completion cards are valid for two years through the end of the month during which the course completion card was issued.
