About the Program

Ramapo College of New Jersey offers courses leading to a Master of Science in Nursing. There are four tracks:

  • Adult/Gerontology
  • Nursing Education
  • Nursing Administration
  • Family Nurse Practitioner

ln addition, a post-Master’s program is offered, designed for those nurses holding a Master’s degree in nursing who are interested in pursuing nursing education.

The Program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) 3390 Peachtree Rd NE, Suite 1400, Atlanta, GA 30326.

Criteria for admission to the degree program include graduation from an approved nursing Bachelor’s degree program or completion of the Transition Program for applicants with non-nursing baccalaureate degrees, an undergraduate cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher (4.0 scale) for all nursing courses and full-time experience as a practicing registered professional nurse.

Outcomes for the Nursing Education Program

Outcome 1: Knowledge – Draws on extant literature and knowledge to design and implement evidence based teaching/learning and evaluation practices to support global nursing education.

Outcome 2: Evidence Based Research and Practice – Contributes to the development of the science of nursing education through the critique, utilization, dissemination of current evidence and the conduct of research.

Outcome 3: Information Management – Develop and use information and communication technologies to enter, retrieve, and evaluate data appropriate for the delivery and evaluation of nursing education.

Outcome 4: Professionalism 

  • Models professional behavior for learners and fellow faculty.
  • Engage in life long learning activities, dissemination of information through scholarship and advocacy.
  • Develops networks, collaborations and partnerships to enhance nursing’s influence within the academic community.

Outcome 5: Social Advocacy – Utilize knowledge about the educational environment within they which they practice and recognize how the political, institutional, social and economic forces impact the global educator role.

Outcome 6: Leadership – Provides leadership in the parent institution as well as in the nursing program to enhance visibility of nursing and its contribution to the global academic community.

Outcome 7: Role Function – Participates in interdisciplinary efforts to address health care needs locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

Outcomes for the Nursing Administration Program

Outcome 1: Knowledge

  • Incorporate administration and leadership theories in the design, development, implementation and evaluation of quality nursing health care delivery programs.
  • Encompass concepts of fiscal responsibility and human resource management in designing quality care.

Outcome 2: Evidence Based Research and Practice – Integrate principles of evidence based practice and current research in the design and implementation of nursing and health care delivery programs.

Outcome 3: Information Management – Advocate for and use information and communication technologies to enter, retrieve, and evaluate data appropriate for the delivery and evaluation of nursing care delivery.

Outcome 4: Professionalism 

  • Incorporate ethical principles in leadership and management practices.
  • Build leadership alliances for collaborative action, change and decision making across the health care delivery system.

Outcome 5: Social Advocacy – Influence the health policy making process through the involvement and leadership of nurses having diverse perspectives.

Outcome 6: Leadership – Lead in a manner that recognizes the cultural and spiritual context of the health care community and environment.

Outcome 7: Role Function – Integrate advanced core competencies and clinical expertise to evaluate and continually improve nursing care delivery systems.

Outcomes for the Family Nurse Practitioner Program and the Adult Gerontology Program

Outcome 1: Knowledge

  • Applies knowledge of organizational practices and complex systems to improve health care delivery.
  • Develops new practice approaches based on the integration of research, theory and practice knowledge.

Outcome 2: Evidence Based Research and Practice 

  • Uses best available evidence to continually improve quality of clinical practice
  • Provides leadership in the translation of new knowledge into practice

Outcome 3: Information Management

  • Uses technology systems that capture data on variables for the evaluation of nursing care.
  • Contributes to the design of clinical information systems that promote safe, quality and cost effective care.

Outcome 4: Professionalism 

  • Applies ethically sound solutions to complex issues related to individuals, populations and systems of care.
  • Advances practice through the development and implementation of innovations incorporating principles of change.

Outcome 5: Social Advocacy

  • Analyzes the implications of health policy across disciplines.
  • Contributes to the development of health policy.
  • Evaluates the impact of globalization on health care policy development.

Outcome 6: Leadership – Assumes leadership to foster collaboration with multiple stakeholders  (patients, community and interprofessional groups) to facilitate the development, implementation and evaluation of care provided in complex systems.

Outcome 7: Role Function 

  • Integrate advanced core competencies and clinical expertise to evaluate and continually improve nursing care.
  • Provides a full spectrum of health care services to include health promotion, disease prevention, health protection, anticipatory guidance counseling, disease management, palliative and end of life care.
  • Provides patient/family centered care recognizing cultural diversity of the family recognizing the patient/family as a full partner in decision making.
Requirements of the Nursing Education Program

Program Requirements

  1. The degree program consists of 34 credits.
  2. To remain in good academic standing, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Post-Master’s Program

There is a Post-Master’s Program designed for those nurses holding a Master’s Degree in Nursing and who are interested in pursuing Nursing Education.

  1. The Post-Masters’ program consists of 15 credits
Requirements of the Nursing Administration Program

Program Requirements

  1. The degree program consists of 34 to 35 credits with a 135-hour Role Practicum.  This will enable the graduate to sit for the Advanced Nurse Administrator (NEA-BC) certification of the ANCC.
  2. To remain in good academic standing, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
