Harry C. Boyte\u2019s work on civic engagement and higher education is foundational for reconceptualizing civic learning.\u00a0 He writes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;padding-left: 30px\">We need to move beyond narrow views of citizenship as voting and voluntarism, and reinvent citizenship as public work, work that explicitly and intentionally prepares our students (and ourselves) to be builders of democracy, not simply helpers, voters, analysts, informers, or critics of democracy.*<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The selection of courses in the CIVL minor ask students to examine their potential for leadership within a number of domains, including interpersonal styles of leadership, ethical traditions, domestic and international politics, and social justice. Additionally, students can situate this broad foundation within the field they wish to pursue via the elective course offerings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><u>Program Objective<\/u>: Ramapo College of New Jersey students and graduates of the Civic and Community Leadership minor shall be engaged in the public work of building democracy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">*Democracy\u2019s Education: Public Work, Citizenship, and the Future of Colleges and\u00a0\u00a0Universities (2015)<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Outcomes for the Minor<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p><strong>Goal 1<\/strong>: To familiarize students with the foundations of civic knowledge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Outcome 1<\/strong>: Students should be able to articulate arguments about ethics in civic life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Outcome 2<\/strong>: Students should be able to articulate arguments about the American political system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goal 2:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>To familiarize students with the practice of civic leadership.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Outcome 1<\/strong>:\u00a0 Students should be able to articulate leadership styles and apply them to real-world problems.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Requirements of the Minor <\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<ol>\n<li>Students are required to take 5 courses (16 credits) to complete this minor.<\/li>\n<li>Courses fulfilling the requirements for the primary or second major may count towards the requirements of the minor, but may not exceed one-half of the credits required in the minor.
