The program prepares students for employment in industry and academia and to engage in research. <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bioinformatics skill sets are one of the most sought-after in the current job market as well as by graduate\/professional programs. Therefore, students graduating with this major have many attractive career options. <\/span>In addition to the pharmaceutical and biotech industry, potential employers include research labs in academia, hospitals, governmental agencies, the software industry and the bioinformatics service industry. The bioinformatics program provides excellent preparation for graduate, medical and other professional schools.<\/p>\n<p>Bioinformatics is a modern interdisciplinary science that uses computational techniques to frame and to resolve biological problems.\u00a0 Bioinformatics allows scientists to answer questions which require the interpretation of large datasets and to detect trends in data that emerge when a \u201cbigger picture\u201d is considered.\u00a0 This effective management of biological data allows scientists to create molecular models, discover genes and biomarkers, assign functions to newly discovered genes, and to study relationships like the structure and function of proteins and biomolecular pathways.\u00a0 Bioinformatics is practiced in the fields of molecular, personalized and preventative medicine, biotechnology and nanobiotechnology.\u00a0 Applying this powerful new technology can help to prevent, diagnose and treat inherited and other diseases, design new drugs and vaccines <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0(such as vaccines against COVID)<\/span>; shorten the development cycle of new medicines and much more.<\/p>\n<p>Bioinformatics is a rapidly growing and evolving field.\u00a0 Opportunities exist to join the forefront of research in industry as well as academic institutions.\u00a0 Northern New Jersey\/New York area is a hub for the pharmaceutical industry and one of the largest centers of biotechnology.\u00a0 Ramapo College is well-suited for a Bioinformatics program because it is proximal to institutions of higher education and companies that have high-priority programs in Bioinformatics.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ramapo College B.S. in Bioinformatics program also offers accelerated paths to graduate degrees, such as a 4+1 program in B.S. to M.S. in Data Science. Talk to a faculty advisor in the Bioinformatics program for more information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The bioinformatics curriculum has been designed to lay a solid multidisciplinary foundation in modern life sciences, chemistry, mathematics, as well as cutting-edge computer technology using informatics as an interdisciplinary, cohesive tool.\u00a0 In advanced courses, students are trained to manage biological data, develop computational methods to analyze and interpret data, solve scientific problems and make new discoveries.\u00a0 In addition to the scientific and technical concepts, students are also exposed to the social, business, and ethical aspects of science.<\/p>\n<p>Highly qualified and experienced educators teach courses in the Bioinformatics curriculum.\u00a0 The faculty members are actively engaged in research and typically involve undergraduate students in their projects.\u00a0 Students are also encouraged to present their findings at research conferences and publish their accomplishments in peer-reviewed scientific journals.<\/p>\n<p>Supporting academic programs with the technology necessary for their success is a top priority at Ramapo College.\u00a0 The College has well-maintained modern laboratories for biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, chemistry and physics that are used for the Bioinformatics program.\u00a0 In addition, two ultramodern labs have been specially designed to teach Bioinformatics courses.\u00a0 Several servers have also been dedicated to Bioinformatics teaching and research.<\/p>\n<p>The Major is offered by the School of Theoretical and Applied Science and leads to a B.S. degree in Bioinformatics.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Outcomes for the Major<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p><strong>Goal 1:\u00a0 <\/strong>\u00a0Knowledge of fundamental biological processes at organism, physiological, cellular and molecular levels. Basic understanding of principles of chemistry and their applications to living systems; properties of bio-molecules and their contribution to structure and function of cells.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Outcome 1:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Demonstrate knowledge of the structural and functional organization of the living cells. Describe properties of bio-molecules. Explain how macromolecules catalyze chemical transformations and build complex multi-molecular structures of the cell. Exhibit familiarity with the major techniques for studying structure and function of cells at molecular level.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Outcome 2:<\/strong> Explain how macromolecules store and transmit hereditary information. Demonstrate understanding of their molecular structure\/function relationships. Understand the impact of variation on biological function.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goal 2:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0Understanding of computer programming methodology; including algorithm design and program development, utilizing mathematical concepts and tools. Capability of designing and applying software tools for biological data analysis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Outcome 4:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Demonstrate understanding of algorithms and computational methods in bioinformatics. Be able to apply existing computational tools to solve biological problems and perform data analysis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Outcome 5:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Demonstrate strong programming skills.
