{"id":1393,"date":"2013-07-24T07:03:15","date_gmt":"2013-07-24T11:03:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/catalog-2013-2014\/sshs\/substanceabuse\/"},"modified":"2018-07-30T11:28:51","modified_gmt":"2018-07-30T15:28:51","slug":"substanceusedisorders","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/catalog-2018-2019\/sshs\/substanceusedisorders\/","title":{"rendered":"Substance Use Disorders"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Website: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/sshs\/\"> School of Social Science and Human Services<\/a><\/h4>\n<div class=\"facultyTable\"><div class=\"row colSet\"><br \/>\n<div class=\"sColumn col-sm-12 col-md-12 \"><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"convenerListing\">Convener:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/sshs\/faculty\/kathleen-ray\/\">Kathleen Ray<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/sshs\/faculty\/stephanie-elias-sarabia\/\">Stephanie Sarabia<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>About the Minor <\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p>Ramapo College offers a minor in Substance Use Disorders\u00a0that is primarily designed for students who are interested in substance abuse counseling.<\/p>\n<p>Students will be expected to have an introductory course in either psychology or social work as prerequisites for the minor sequence.<\/p>\n<p>The courses in the minor will include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Introduction to Substance Use Disorders\u00a0(An introductory course that must be taken\u00a0prior to core courses).<\/li>\n<li>Case Management\u00a0for Substance Use Disorders<\/li>\n<li>Counseling for Substance Use Disorders I<\/li>\n<li>Counseling for Substance Use Disorders II<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The courses are repeated each year so that they can be taken in as few as three semesters.<\/p>\n<p>The minor in Substance Use Disorders is designed to fulfill all of the academic requirements applicable towards state certification as a\u00a0 Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (CADC).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">The minor will be of particular interest to students majoring in the helping professions such as psychology and social work. Some courses in the minor also count towards satisfying major requirements in psychology and social work. However, the minor is open to all interested students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The faculty teaching in this program are all professionals in the field of substance use disorder counseling. In addition to full-time faculty and staff at Ramapo College, experts from the community teach in the program on an adjunct basis. This provides students with the best combination: excellent teachers who have years of direct, professional experience in the field.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\"><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Outcomes for the Minor<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p><strong>Goal 1: <\/strong>Demonstrate competence in substance use disorders specific content knowledge, be able to integrate and apply that knowledge, including critically selecting research-informed interventions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Outcome 1: <\/strong>Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the spectrum of\u00a0substance use disorders and the components of their evaluation.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Outcome 2: <\/strong>Students will be able to demonstrate integration and application of\u00a0 counseling skills to address substance use disorders.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Requirements of the Minor <\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<ol>\n<li>At least 1\/2 of the courses fulfilling a minor must be distinct from the student\u2019s major. That is, three of the five courses required for a minor cannot be used towards fulfillment of major requirements. A school core does not need to be completed for a minor.
