It is designed to enable students with specialized interests in the Social Sciences to develop, in collaboration with a faculty advisor, a coherent program of courses in areas of inquiry for which regular majors are not offered, allowing students to explore specialized or emerging fields. Examples of such programs include, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\">Community Mental Health<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Cultural Studies<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Ethnic Relations<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Gender Studies<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Labor Studies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">It is recommended that students consider combining their major concentration with an appropriate minor (e.g. Sociology, Psychology, Substance Abuse, Women\u2019s Studies, Africana Studies, Latin American Studies, Economics).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Each of the concentrations requires 10 courses, at least 4 of which must be at the upper level. Since the choice of concentration and design of the major are individualized, interested students are encouraged to contact the convener early in their college careers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The major is offered by the School of Social Science and Human Services and leads to a BA degree. In addition to the major requirements, students must fulfill the following General Education and School of Social Science and Human Services requirements.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Outcomes for the Major<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p><strong>Outcome 1: <\/strong>Demonstrate critical analysis of arguments and evaluate major assertions.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Outcome 2: <\/strong>Write effectively.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Outcome 3: <\/strong>Demonstrate an understanding of methods, skills, and tools used in a variety of disciplines including historical, theoretical, scientific, and philosophical.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Outcome 4: <\/strong>Ability to use appropriate technologies to conduct research and evaluate that research.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Outcome 5: <\/strong>Understand and articulate the importance of diversity within and among societies.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span> Requirements of the Major and Concentrations<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<ol>\n<li>Transfer students who have 48 or more credits accepted at the time of transfer are waived from the courses marked with a <strong><strong>(W)<\/strong> <\/strong> below.\u00a0 Waivers do not apply to Major Requirements.<\/li>\n<li>Double counting between General Education, School Core, and Major may be possible.\u00a0 Check with your advisor to see if any apply.<\/li>\n<li>Writing Intensive Requirement (five courses): \u00a0two writing intensive courses in the general education curriculum are required: Critical Reading and Writing and Studies in the Arts and Humanities;
