{"id":95,"date":"2013-10-18T10:03:28","date_gmt":"2013-10-18T14:03:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/catalog-2010-2011\/sshs\/substanceabuse\/"},"modified":"2013-11-04T10:17:25","modified_gmt":"2013-11-04T15:17:25","slug":"substanceabuse","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/catalog-2010-2011\/sshs\/substanceabuse\/","title":{"rendered":"Substance Abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"facultyTable\"><div class=\"columnSet\"><br \/>\n<div class=\"stackableColumn\" ><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"convenerListing\">Convener:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/sshs\/faculty\/\">Marshall Harth<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\" type=\"button\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\">About the Minor<\/div>\n<p>Ramapo College offers a minor in Substance Abuse that is primarily designed for students who are interested in substance abuse counseling.<\/p>\n<p>Students will be expected to have introductory courses in both psychology and biology* as prerequisites for the minor sequence.<\/p>\n<p>The courses in the minor will include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Substance Abuse (An introductory course that must be taken<br \/>\nprior to core courses).<\/li>\n<li>Drugs and Behavior (Psychopharmacology).<\/li>\n<li>Counseling Substance Abusers I (An overview of counseling<br \/>\nneeds and issues facing abusers and their families).<\/li>\n<li>Counseling Substance Abusers II (Treatment and techniques).<\/li>\n<li>Integrative Fieldwork: Substance Abuse Practicum in Treatment (intervention or prevention).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The courses are repeated each year so that they can be taken in as few as two semesters though we recommend taking a longer period of time to complete the sequence.<\/p>\n<p>The minor in Substance Abuse is designed to fulfill the academic requirements applicable towards state certification in substance abuse counseling (Alcohol and other Drugs of Abuse Counselor Certification). The fieldwork will give a hands-on experience in community agencies who deliver these services. Fieldwork will count towards the fieldwork\/experience hours required for certification.<\/p>\n<p>The minor will be of particular interest to students majoring in the helping professions such as psychology and social work. Some courses in the minor also count towards satisfying major requirements in psychology and social work. In addition to full-time faculty and staff at Ramapo College, experts from the community teach in the program on an adjunct basis.
