\nBlack Lives Matter at Ramapo: <\/em><\/strong>
\nA College Colloquium on Race, Social Justice, and Representation<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n

What matters? Who matters? This year\u2019s Black Lives Matter at Ramapo<\/strong> colloquium will examine issues related to Voting Rights as we prepare for a new election season in November. The five sessions will take place on select Wednesdays during the Fall 2022 semester. Sessions will be held in Trustees Pavilion 3, beginning at 6:05 p.m. on the dates listed within the schedule below.<\/p>\n

Students can also register<\/strong> for the colloquium as a 1-credit course. It can be found as: CNTP 190-01, TPCS: BLCK LVS MATTER AT RAMAPO, CRN 41578.<\/p>\n

SESSION ONE: Sep 14, 2022 <\/strong><\/p>\n

SPEAKER: Dr. Deirdre Foreman, Associate Director of the Equal Opportunity Fund (EOF) at Ramapo College<\/p>\n

TITLE: The History of Voting Rights and Suppression<\/p>\n

DESCRIPTION:<\/p>\n

Dr. Foreman will lead a discussion on the History of Voting Rights in the United States, including resistance and oppression. Voter registration information will also be available for students at this session.<\/p>\n

SESSION TWO: September 28, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n

SPEAKER: Dr. Aaron Lorenz, Dean of the School of Social Science and Human Services, hosted by Prof. Regina Clark<\/p>\n

TITLE: Progress or De-evolution: Voting Rights in the U.S.<\/p>\n

DESCRIPTION:<\/p>\n

Dr. Lorenz will explore the history of voting rights in the U.S. in regards to race and how contemporary discussions about voting rights mirror some of the societal conversations from the 18th and 19th centuries.<\/p>\n

SESSION THREE: Oct 12,2022 <\/strong><\/p>\n

SPEAKER: Dr. Paul Reck, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Ramapo College<\/p>\n

TITLE: The Resurrection of Jim Crow at the Ballot Box: Voter Suppression Tactics in the 2020\u2019s<\/p>\n

DESCRIPTION:<\/p>\n

Dr. Reck will focus on the multi-pronged strategy of Republican legislators in many states to make it more difficult for people of color to vote. This session also will include a discussion of the political context that has galvanized these voter suppression efforts and how the tactics of today compare with voter suppression tactics targeting people of color in the past.<\/p>\n

SESSION FOUR – Oct 26, 2022 <\/strong><\/p>\n

TITLE: The Future of Voting and Knowing Your Voting Rights<\/p>\n

SPEAKER: Special guests Karen Thompson, Senior Staff Attorney, ACLU of NJ and Elyla Huertes, Staff Attorney, ACLU of NJ<\/p>\n

DESCRIPTION:<\/p>\n

Session Four will emphasize the importance of voting, with the next election cycle coming in November 2022, and it will also cover the future of generational rights and voting rights. It will offer students advice on how to stay motivated and involved, both in their local communities and on campus.<\/p>\n

SESSION FIVE – Nov 9, 2022 <\/strong><\/p>\n

SPEAKER: Dr. Nakia Matthias<\/p>\n

TITLE: Lessons Learned: Safeguarding the Future of Our Voting Rights through Information and Influence<\/p>\n

DESCRIPTION:<\/p>\n

This discussion will examine lessons learned for securing voting rights to date, as well as explore the strategic roles of information and social influence in generating informed electorates to encourage and support their movement to the polls.<\/p>\n
