SUMMARY:Marisol
DESCRIPTION:Marisol \nBy Jose Rivera \nDirected by Terra Vandergaw \nThere’s a war in heaven and things on Earth have gotten really bad. Coffee is extinct\, food\ntastes like salt\, the moon hasn’t been seen for months\, and credit card debt is a crime. After a\nparticularly harrowing commute home\, Marisol Perez doesn’t know if she’s dead or alive.\nInspired by Milton’s Paradise Lost\, Jose Rivera’s apocalyptic and prophetic urban fantasy has the angels in revolt against a senile god while our heroine attempts to save herself and her loved ones on her own. Winner of the 1993 Obie award\, Marisol is a contemporary classic and call to wake up! \nGeneral Admission: $15  RCNJ Students: $5* \n*ticket limits apply. In order to receive the RCNJ Student Discount\, you MUST come to the Box Office to purchase your ticket.  \nContent Warning: Not recommended for young children. \nMarisol contains discussions and depictions of violent and traumatic moments including sexual assault\, gun violence\, warfare\, attacks on the homeless\, and stillbirth. Strong language\, adult language\, racial slurs\, and radical religious themes are expressed. All moments of intimacy and/or violence in the production have been carefully created and choreographed by the fight choreographer/intimacy director and the director with the actors’ safety in mind and with their consent. \nClick Here to Purchase Tickets

SUMMARY:New Red Order presents "Mergers"
DESCRIPTION:Mergers is a one-night only performance being presented in conjunction with the New Red Order (NRO) exhibition Give it Back: Stage Theory in the Kresge & Pascal Galleries from November 2- December 9. \nMergers will feature Kite\, an Ogála Lakḣóta artist\, composer\, and academic for an evening that will interweave screenings of short films\, supported by movements from a host of proxies\, including accomplices Ashley Byler and Jeremy Pheiffer. The event converges around NRO and Kite’s shared inquiry into desires for indigeneity\, and the persistence and permeation of these desires in myths\, dreams and foundations of the so-called Americans. \nNew Red Order (NRO) is a public secret society collaborating with networks of self-described “informants” and “accomplices\,” to interrogate individual and collective desires for indigeneity. Since 2014\, the amorphous group has deployed elements of time-based media including video and sound\, along with sculpture\, installation\, and performance in order to shift potential obstructions to Indigenous growth and create grounds for Indigenous futures. \nThe performance is free\, open to the public\, and does not require a ticket for admission. \nPhoto: New Red Order\, Out of Step\, In Place\, 2021\, screening-performance\, Aupuni Space\, Kaka’ako\, O’ahu

SUMMARY:Rediscovering Community
DESCRIPTION:Rediscovering 1 Rediscovering 2 Rediscovering 3 \n  \nRediscovering Community is the theme for this season’s call for artists featuring new works-in-progress.  Join us for this evening of multi-disciplinary work based on how the arts are helping us to rediscover and come together as a community. Featured artists this year are Joseph Bertolozzi\, Marylou and Jerome Bongiorno\, Jane Rigler\, and Tessa Brinckman. \nTICKETS ARE FREE BUT A TICKET IS REQUIRED TO ENTER.  \n*Ticket limits apply. In order to receive the RCNJ Faculty/Staff/Retiree or RCNJ Student Discount\, you MUST come to the Box Office to purchase your ticket.  \nTo purchase wheelchair accessible seating or for questions regarding alternative formats\, please contact the Box Office at (201) 684-7844 \n  \nClick Here to Reserve Tickets \nAbout the Artists\nJoseph Bertolozzi – “…An eye illumined by another sun…” \nThis work is part of an intended larger suite probing the unexpected profiles of the solo gong. Over a decade ago my solo percussion project The Bronze Collection explored expressive and unexpected nuances within gongs and cymbals utilizing the whole range of musical expression\, from dynamic contrast (barely audible to roaring cadences) and coloristic shading (muting\, playing on their edges\, & various surfaces with unusual mallets)\, to extended techniques (playing a gong or cymbal with a cello bow\, etc.). Writing and performing multi-movement works opened up a window not only in my mind but for my audiences. Those techniques and insights later informed my larger public works on New York’s Mid-Hudson Bridge and Eiffel Tower in Paris. \nBut with two lost years to Covid of necessity I turned from those gigantically public utterances back to gongs once again\, and reduced things further to an even more intimate expression of music: the solo gong. At first this was for myself; of course\, I couldn’t play anywhere anyway! But in reassessing a strongly limited sonic palette\, I found new expressions that could draw audiences into a new sphere of awareness. Not the sonorities of a new age “gong bath\,” this isn’t that; but of an articulate\, eloquent engine of ideas and musical exchange. The expectation of a gong being a loud one-trick pony is upended in this atmospheric\, introspective opus. As we convene once again for public art\, this serves as a rediscovery of what we thought we knew. \n \n\nMarylou & Jerome Bongiorno – City Symphony Films in 3D \nEven before the pandemic\, the Bongiornos used the medium of film to create environments that expanded audiences’ views of our communities. In 2009\, they were commissioned by the Newark Museum to produce an immersive video installation in 3D that celebrated what’s endured in their home city of Newark\, NJ\, for over a hundred years. That led them to do the same for Brooklyn (Jerome’s birth city) and Staten Island (Jerome’s prior home) for exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York and the new Staten Island Museum\, respectively. These 3D films\, in the style of global city symphony films of the ’20s and ’30s\, allowed viewers to step into new cities and experience their rich diversity while standing or sitting in a museum gallery\, an airport\, train station\, cafe\, or classroom\, sometimes thousands of miles away. \nDuring Covid lockdown\, the Bongiornos experimented with transforming paintings into 3D video images\, to dispel the feeling of isolation and to break the wall of 2D art. Compositions were inspired by what had been their regular visits to museums\, playing jazz guitar in soup kitchens and other volunteerism. This way\, viewers can become part of the spaces and be part of the greater community. \n \n\nTessa Brinckman & Jane Rigler – Your Coat\, Turning – a telematic community \nRediscovering 4 rediscovering 5 \n“Your Coat\, Turning” is a telematic invitation to create multiple futures through sound\, video\, text and play – a game of recreations of self and community. The climate crisis means that the coat of the earth is changing — and we must be able to deal with injury with creativity\, beyond survival to renewal. Joy and imagination are necessary birthrights\, and communal\, political acts. Our concept of “community” offers an experience of building reliable and meaningful work\, that people can belong to\, and build their own futurism. We are interested in how to transform our individual and collective metaphorical coats (i.e. identity) to form other inevitable and necessary coats\, through the experience of sounding and imagining. \n“Your Coat\, Turning” is both a film and sound performance with the audience as co-creators (no prior skills necessary). The piece draws from mixed media\, sound\, movement\, and contemplative practices. Text and video prompt the audience to discover ways to interact with (provided) mystery objects that create a communal music experience.
