Applicants are encouraged to visit the campus. Other than Immediate Decision Day, acceptances are made on a rolling basis, and applicants should submit the completed application, transcript, and test scores as early as possible.

 INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
The diversified academic programs at Ramapo are offered in five Schools:

  • Anisfield School of Business
  • American and International Studies
  • Contemporary Arts
  • Social Science and Human Services
  • Theoretical and Applied Science
  • plus the Division of Basic Studies

Together they offer more than 700 courses in over 30 academic programs covering the arts, sciences, humanities, social science, business, and pre-professional studies.

An excellent faculty - 94 percent have either a Ph.D. or terminal degree - ensure an exciting classroom experience. Academic facilities include the college library, a four-story building containing approximately 150,000 volumes, as well as a collection of slides, films, records, government documents, technologically advanced computer telecommunications, and satellite TV centers.

The Angelica and Russ Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts, which opened in May of 1999, includes a state-of-the-art 350 seat theater, a 125 black box theater, and a full size rehearsal hall, as well as technical facilities for make-up, costume design / construction and set design / construction. Honors programs, independent study, cooperative education, internships, and other academic opportunities are also available.

ON-CAMPUS HOUSING AND FOOD
Two types of housing comprise the on-campus living facilities for students. Pine and Linden Halls have their own lounges, mailrooms, laundry and storage areas. Together they house over 600 freshman and sophomore students. Oak Hall, the newest resident facility features private bathrooms for each two students, as well as a fitness center and nearby dining hall. Students living in Pine, Oak or Linden Halls must use the College meal plan since there are no kitchens available in those residences.

Garden apartments that house 700 students are available to continuing students. Each unit is equipped with two bedrooms, a living room, dining area and kitchenette. Because of the kitchen areas, students may purchase and prepare their own food. However, the meal plan is also available to those who wish to participate.

Students are expected to supply their own bed linens, blankets, pillows and kitchen utensils (pots, pans, tableware, etc.). These supplies can be purchased in local stores. You should expect to spend approximately (U.S.) $150 for these items. Housing is awarded at the time of admission. Students are advised against living off campus. Find out more about :

INTERNATIONAL ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS
The College Admissions Office requires that candidates apply prior to March 1 for September enrollment and November 1 for January enrollment. The following major factors are considered in determining eligibility for admission:

  1. Freshman applicants must have completed coursework equivalent to that of an American student who has graduated from high school. All pertinent certificates and transcripts must be certified and submitted with the application. Photocopies are not acceptable.

  2. Transfer applicants must submit all official secondary and post-secondary records. Students who are transferring from colleges abroad must submit the above credentials as well as official college transcripts. Freshmen applicants who want academic scholarship consideration must apply by January 15. It may be necessary for students to have their college transcripts evaluated by World Education Services (see below) in order to receive credit for course work completed in other countries. Students who are transferring from colleges in the United States must also submit official transcripts and financial documents. However, if the student has passed English composition with a grade of C or better, a TOEFL score is not required.

  3. All official documents not issued in English must be accompanied by notarized English translations.

  4. Applicants must demonstrate fluency in English by the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam. We expect students to have a TOEFL score of 550 on the paper-based test, 213 on the computer-based test, or 90 on the internet test. TOEFL Web site

  6. Applicants must submit evidence as to their source of financial support. International students are expected to meet the full cost of their studies at Ramapo. Therefore, an Affidavit of Support Form (below) and a notarized bank statement are required before the I-20 is issued.

    Affidavit of Support (PDF)

Ramapo is unable to provide financial assistance for international students. While the opportunity for on-campus employment does exist, it is extremely limited and students should not come to the College expecting to suppliment thier income in this manner. In addition, international students will not be authorized to work off campus except for limited periods of time through cooperative education with International Student Advisor approval.

Students who have signed statements that they have enough money to meet their expenses cannot expect the institution to assume responsibility if their funds prove inadequate. The instiution and the immigration service may require international students to return home if they have no money and help cannot be found.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT GENERAL EXPENSES
A list of approximate expenses for one academic year (September-June) may assist Ramapo’s prospective international students in estimating costs for education and living in the United States. Students should budget another $100 per month for personal expenses.

In addition, living expenses for June, July and August are approximately (U.S.) $2,500. If you register for summer coursework, you can also expect to pay about (U.S.) $2,000 for your program. INTERNATIONAL STUDENT REQUIREMENTS

VISA
After the student accepts Ramapo’s offer of admission and returns the acceptance form with the appropriate admission fees, the College will issue the I-20 Form which must be presented along with financial support statements to the nearest U.S. Consulate or Embassy in order to obtain an F-1 Student Visa. Exchange students will receive the IAP-66 which must be presented to the U.S. Consulate or Embassy in order to receive the J-1 Visa.

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENT
It is now required that all students attending Ramapo College have proof of two immunizations for measles (rubeola), one for German measles (rubella), and one for mumps. Upon admission to Ramapo College, you will be sent the International Students Immunization Requirement Form which should be completed and returned before the I-20 is issued. In addition, a tuberculosis (TB) test is required. This test should be in the form of a Mantoux-PPD test. If the results of your test are positive, you must have a chest x-ray to rule out active infection. Since a majority of colleges in the United States have some type of immunization requirement, it is highly recommended that, if you do not have these specific immunizations, you make plans to be immunized as soon as possible so that issuance of your I-20 Form is not delayed.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY
The college requires that its international students possess strong reading and comprehension English language skills. Since no beginning level of English as a Second Language is offered, English language skills must be developed sufficiently to permit full-time study. Upon arrival, all international students are required to take the ESL Placement Test. The results of this test are used to place students in the appropriate level of English class. Read the ESL section below for more information. International transfer students who have completed College English I with a grade of "C" or better at an accredited college or university in the Unites States must complete College English II at Ramapo. Students who passed College English I and II with a grade of "C" or better have fulfilled English's requirement.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program at Ramapo College is designed for students whose first or primary language is not English. The purpose of the Program, which consists of two courses at the intermediate level and two courses at the advanced level, is to help these students develop their English language proficiency so that they can successfully complete college-level coursework.
