Au Pair Program

What is the Ramapo College Au Pair Program (AUP)?
The Ramapo College Au Pair Program is specifically designed for au pairs so that they can experience Ramapo College’s exceptional academic environment, and fulfill the academic component of their J-1 visas.  Visitor or Tourist visas holders are not eligible for this program. Ramapo’s global perspective, which is offered in over 40 academic programs in the humanities, sciences, social sciences, and business, provides an excellent educational opportunity for anyone interested in international exchange and understanding. A valid J-1 visa is required. Au Pair participants must attend a mandatory orientation on January 8, 2008 and bring as identification a valid passport or NJ drivers license. (see orientation reservation). Returning students do not have to attend the orientation or fill out the orientation form. However, both new students and returning students MUST fill out the application (see application form below).

What courses are available?
Au Pair Program participants can enroll in most 100- or 200-level undergraduate course (except English and nursing courses*) provided there are seats available in the course at the time of the AUP registration period (see ‘registration period’ below). Registration is not available for these course offerings until January 28 and the R number must be assigned by the Admissions department. Students can VIEW course offerings and course descriptions:

*Ramapo College does not offer English as a Second Language (ESL) courses.  Students interested in taking any other English course must take Ramapo College’s English Placement Test to determine eligibility prior to registering for courses.  Participants registered in courses for which they are not eligible will be automatically dropped from the course and will forfeit any payment made.

Do Au Pair Program participants earn academic credit?
No.  Au Pair Program participants audit courses and may audit one or two courses per semester.  Audited courses are not eligible for academic credit (i.e. college credit) and do not transfer to college or universities. Auditing a course means that participants are not required to complete assignments, papers, or exams.  After successful completion of a course, participants receive a grade of ‘AU’, and not a letter grade of ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, etc.  Even though participants audit courses, they are strongly encouraged to actively participate in class so that they enhance their educational experience and fully benefit from the course.  Some professors may have class attendance policies and may require full participation.  Participants must speak with the professor at the beginning of the semester to determine expectations. If a student fails to attend class, the instructor may give an administrative “withdrawal”. Upon registration for the class, a letter of introduction must be presented the faculty member on your first day of class. (see letter link below)

At the completion of the course, AUP participants may request an official transcript (record of course work) from the Registrar's Office. Transcript service is free of charge and will satisfy an au pair agency’s proof of enrollment.  To request an official transcript, participants must contact the Office of the Registrar and allow at least one week for processing. What is the cost and duration of the Au Pair Program?
The cost of the Au Pair Program is $250 per course, and participants may audit one or two courses per semester.  There are two semesters per academic year: fall and spring.  The fall semester runs from September through December, and the spring semester runs from January through May.  Courses range from one (1) to four (4) credits, and some courses may charge an additional fee (see course descriptions) which is in addition to the $250 course fee. The cost of textbooks is also additional.

Au Pair Program participants can take a maximum of two courses per semester for a maximum of four courses per academic year.  Summer session courses (May – August) are not available for Au Pair Program participants.

Is parking available on campus?
Yes, however, ALL student vehicles parked on campus must have a valid parking permit decal permanently affixed to the lower right corner of the left-side rear window. Parking permits cost $100 for SPRING ONLY. A student entering for the first time in the spring term must obtain a spring only parking permit. Parking permits obtained during the fall term are also valid in the spring term.

Ramapo College has partnered with ThePermitStore.com to provide a convenient online method of obtaining a parking permit. Students no longer have to wait in line at the Security Office to apply for or pick up a parking permit. Once a student has completed the application process, the parking permit will be mailed directly to the address designated by the student.

All students who drive cars to class are required to have a parking decal for their vehicles. You must log onto www.ThePermitStore.com in order to purchase your parking decal. If you purchased a decal in September, you will not need one for the spring semester. However, if this is your first enrollment at Ramapo, you will be required to purchase a spring decal. If you have questions concerning the parking permit, you may contact Customer Support Service at 805-963-9400.

For information about parking fees, please visit the Bursar's website.
