IVCF's Mission Statement

"The purpose of Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship USA is to establish and advance at colleges and universities, witnessing communities of students and faculty who follow Jesus as a Savior and Lord: growing in love for God, God's Word, God's people of every ethnicity and culture, and God's purposes in the world."

The Inter Varsity Doctrinal Basics:

  1. The unique Divine inspiration, entire trustworthiness and uthority of the Bible.
  2. The Deity of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
  3. The necessity and efficacy of the substitutionary death of Jesus Christ for the redemption of the world, and the historic fact of His bodily resurrection.
  4. The presence and power of the Holy Spirit in the work in regeneration.
  5. The expectation of the personal return of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Focus Groups

Focus groups are centered around a question. Typically, one or two people begin the discussion with a question. After the question is asked, the members of a group discus the question. Facilitators of the group are not supposed to be included in the discussion other than initially asking a question, they are not there to preach or lecture. The initial question asked can be about anything, preferably a current issue. People are there to express views, not to argue. The main purpose of these is to build relationships and encourage other people to communicate to each other.

God Investigation Groups

GIGs are primarily used by Christians to introduce non-Christians to the Bible. These groiups take the truth of the Bible and relate it to something that non-Christians can relate to, like movies.

A GIG session will typically begin with an ice-breaking question about a film, say "Face-Off." Some questions asked might be: "What is the film saying about being transparent?" or "what are the faces that you have put on in the past that you have found entrapping?" The group, typically, will have 5 minutes to answer these questions. Once these questions have been answered, the GIG leader then relates the movie to a passage of scripture.

Movies are not the only tool used in GIG groups. The ice- breaking questions may be asked by themselves, without any connections. Teaching notes may also be used to lead / start a GIG discussion, but always remember that the main focus of any GIG discussion is to introduce non-believers the truth contained in the Bible.
