What is Checkpoint?

Checkpoint is a health and safety educational program designed as a proactive intervention in the areas of alcohol, other drugs, related violence and anger management.

Who Attends?

Students are referred to the program either through the College judicial process when found in violation of campus alcohol/other drug policies, or on a voluntary basis by self, faculty, staff or friends.

What is Involved?

Once referred, each student undergoes a four-step process in understanding the impact of alcohol and other drugs use on academic, personal, and social success.

  • Individual assessment/evaluation of their alcohol/other drug use, social/behavioral history
  • Educational programming (group/classroom setting in interactive style)
  • Counseling and/or referral to outside agency for more intense treatment
  • Relationship maintenance for ongoing prevention

The individual assessment/evaluation is a major part of the entire CheckPoint program. This intense process will determine the level of programming for each student. Some of the issues explored:

  • Frequency of alcohol/other drug consumption per week/month
  • Amount of alcohol/other drug consumed during each event
  • Duration of each event
  • Type of alcohol/other drug consumed
  • History of blackouts
  • Intent to get "puke drunk," "wasted"
  • Effect on relationships, GPA, class/employment attendance and/or participation
  • History of alcohol/other drug use
  • Legal issues
  • Family history of alcohol/other drug u se
  • Personal concerns regarding alcohol/other drug use
  • Development of "action plan"

Time involvement in the CheckPoint program will be determined on an individual basis according to the assessment/evaluation.

Confidentiality is an essential consideration of program participation; all records established will remain in the Center for Health and Counseling; only notification of "completion or failure to complete" will be made to the Office of Judicial Affairs.
