One Touch Of Venus will be Presented at Ramapo College

(Mahwah) - The theater program of Ramapo College of New Jersey will present One Touch of Venus April 11, 12 and 16 – 19 at 8 p.m. and on April 13 at 7 p.m. in the Sharp Theater on campus.  Maria Vail Guevara, a professor of theater at the college will direct this production, based on the book by S.J. Perelman and Ogden Nash.

A delightful Broadway musical, One Touch of Venus is filled with big dance numbers, witty dialogue and bursting with screwball comedy.  Set in Manhattan, the play satirizes American suburban values, conformity, artistic fads, and sexual attitudes and makes fun of New Jersey.

The play centers on a statue of Venus, which comes to life and falls hopelessly in love with the first man she sees, a timid barber named Rodney Hatch.  Poking fun at American icons and pop images of the period, the play is delightfully surreal, filled with slapstick and wit.  Originally produced on Broadway in 1943, One Touch of Venus combined the talents of composer Kurt Weill, poet Ogden Nash, Marx Brothers screenwriter J.S. Perleman and legendary director Elia Kazan and ran for 567 performances starring the legendary Mary Martin as Venus.  This rarely produced musical includes the familiar hits “Speak Low” and “That’s Him.”
