Peking Acrobats Bring Gravity-Defying
Acts and Pageantry to Ramapo College

(Mahwah) - The Peking Acrobats, a 26-member troupe of tumblers, contortionists, jugglers, cyclists, gymnasts and clowns bring their gravity-defying feats to the Sharp Theater at Ramapo College of New Jersey for two performances Saturday, March 1 at 3 and 7:30 p.m.

The renowned Chinese troupe highlights the roots of its art and its members’ high-level acrobatic skills by incorporating items commonly in use two thousand years ago, including jugs, plates, drinking vessels, sticks, hoops and straps.

The Peking Acrobats perform a variety of unusual feats--daring maneuvers atop a precarious pagoda of chairs, treacherous wire walking, and a trick cycling kaleidoscope of magnificent movement.   Their show appeals to children and adults, featuring powerful precision tumbling, somersaulting and gymnastics, displays of contortion, flexibility and control, foot juggling dexterity and balancing.   The art of acrobatics in China dates back to the Ch'in Dynasty (225 - 207 B.C.).  The performance also features a group of musicians who play traditional Chinese instruments, creating the atmosphere of a Chinese carnival.

Tickets for the performance are $26, $23 and $20 for adults, $15 for children under 17, and a five percent discount off regular ticket prices for senior citizens.  The Sharp Theater is located in the Angelica and Russ Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts.  For more information, call 201.684.7844.

This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
