Aids Quilt to be Displayed at Ramapo College

(Mahwah) - The AIDS Memorial Quilt will be displayed in Friends Hall on the campus of Ramapo College of New Jersey Thursday, November 30 from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday, December 1 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.  The display is in recognition of World AIDS Day, an international day of action on HIV and AIDS that takes place each year on December 1.

The AIDS Memorial Quilt is a 54-ton tapestry that includes more than 45,000 panels dedicated to more than 88,000 individuals.  The first 40 panels of the quilt were displayed at San Francisco City Hall in 1987.  In addition to national displays, most notably in Washington, D.C., there have been tens of thousands of smaller displays across the country.

Other events planned in recognition of World AIDS Day include:
A screening of DiAna’s Hair Ego:  AIDS Info Up Front, an informative video that documents the growth of the South Carolina AIDS Education Network that operates out of DiAna’s Hair Ego, a beauty salon, on November 30 at 5 p.m.; Doin’ Time in the Homo No Mo Halfway House, a performance by Peterson Toscano that takes the audience on a tour of a Christian residential 12-step program that attempts to save men from the “evil snares of homosexuality” on November 30 at 7 p.m.; a Feminist Art Show of works that explore feminist issues from 9 – 10 a.m. on November 30 and a Day Without Art on December 1.  This event recognizes the lives lost to HIV/AIDS in the art community.  Throughout the day, works of art are covered in black cloth to reflect on the destructiveness of the disease and to recognize the importance of aesthetics in life.  All events will be held in Friends Hall (SC-219) except for the Day Without Art, which is campus wide.

A number of Ramapo College student clubs and administrative offices will sponsor the event, including The Women’s Center, Feminists United, Ramapo Pride, Various Visual Artists, RamaShows, Tau Delta Phi Fraternity, and Ebony Women for Social Change.
