College Presents A Centennial Salute To Coleman Hawkins
(Mahwah) – Jazz at the Berrie Center will present Body and
Soul: A Centennial Salute to Coleman Hawkins featuring the
Barry Harris Trio on Saturday, December 11
at 8 p.m. in the Sharp Theater on the campus
of Ramapo College of New Jersey.
Best known for
his 1939 jazz classic, “Body and Soul,” the
late Coleman Hawkins (Hawk) was the first important tenor saxophonist
and remains one of the greatest jazz figures of all time. The
salute will feature a group of his musical contemporaries – pianist
and composer Barry Harris, bassist Earl May and drummer Leroy Williams. Joining
the trio will be special guests Frank Wess
on saxophone and Joe Wilder on trumpet.
Dr. Barry Harris
is an internationally renowned jazz pianist, composer and educator. He received an honorary doctorate from Northwestern
University, the Living Jazz Legacy Award from the Mid-Atlantic Arts
Association and was awarded an American Jazz Masters Fellowship from
the National Endowment for the Arts. Called the “keeper
of the be-bop flame,” the musician is committed to preserving
jazz through education and performance. He founded the Jazz
Cultural Center in the early 1980s.
Tickets are
$21 for adults, $18 for senior citizens and $12 for youth. The Sharp Theater is located in the Angelica and Russ
Berrie Center for the Performing and Visual Arts. For tickets
