Ramapo College Presents A Centennial Salute To Coleman Hawkins

(Mahwah) – Jazz at the Berrie Center will present Body and Soul:  A Centennial Salute to Coleman Hawkins featuring the Barry Harris Trio on Saturday, December 11 at 8 p.m. in the Sharp Theater on the campus of Ramapo College of New Jersey.

Best known for his 1939 jazz classic, “Body and Soul,” the late Coleman Hawkins (Hawk) was the first important tenor saxophonist and remains one of the greatest jazz figures of all time.  The salute will feature a group of his musical contemporaries – pianist and composer Barry Harris, bassist Earl May and drummer Leroy Williams.  Joining the trio will be special guests Frank Wess on saxophone and Joe Wilder on trumpet.

Dr. Barry Harris is an internationally renowned jazz pianist, composer and educator.  He received an honorary doctorate from Northwestern University, the Living Jazz Legacy Award from the Mid-Atlantic Arts Association and was awarded an American Jazz Masters Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.  Called the “keeper of the be-bop flame,” the musician is committed to preserving jazz through education and performance.  He founded the Jazz Cultural Center in the early 1980s.

Tickets are $21 for adults, $18 for senior citizens and $12 for youth.  The Sharp Theater is located in the Angelica and Russ Berrie Center for the Performing and Visual Arts.  For tickets or information, call 201.684.7844.  This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment of the Arts.
