Screening of ORWELL ROLLS IN HIS GRAVE Explores the 2004 Presidential Election
(Mahwah) – Ramapo College of New Jersey will host a screening of ORWELL ROLLS IN HIS GRAVE, a documentary written and directed by Robert Kane Pappas on Wednesday, October 27 at 1, 4 and 6 p.m. in the H-Wing Auditorium on the College campus. The public is invited to attend. A question and answer session with the filmmaker will be held after the 1. p.m. screening.
The feature length documentary is a critical examination of the “Fourth Estate.” Asking whether America has entered an Orwellian world of doublespeak where lies can pass for the truth, Pappas explores what the media don’t like to talk about: themselves.
Meticulously tracing the process by which media have distorted and dismissed news events, the writer/director presents a mix of media professionals and leading intellectual voices on the media. The film’s “cast” includes Jeff Cohen, an MSNBC producer and on-air commentator and founder of Fairness and Accuracy in the Media; Joe Klines, executive producer of “Fox News at 10;” Charles Lewis, a former investigative reporter for ABC News and a producer for “60 Minutes;” Robert McChesney, a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the author of Rich Media, Poor Democracy and The Problem of the Media; Peter Mitchelmore, former city editor of The New York Post, and director Michael Moore.
“The film is an excellent aside to Farenheit 911, with a bit more scholarly information and less Bush bashing,” notes Mark Shogren, a professor of film at the College. “I think it will be an excellent springboard for a discussion about media power and influence in our society.”
Pappas was born in New York City and educated at Georgetown University and the NYU Graduate School of Film. An award-winning filmmaker, he has written and directed three feature films including Now I Know (Lifetime Television) and the critically acclaimed Some Fish Can Fly (Artistic License – 99). He has also written and directed the non-fiction The Computer Moment featuring W.H. Macy, and has received a Parents Choice Award for his children’s videos.
