Candidates Forum at Ramapo College
(Mahwah) Ramapo College of New Jersey, in conjunction with the League of Women Voters of Bergen County and the League of Women Voters of Ridgewood, will co-sponsor a candidates forum for the five candidates vying for the 5th Congressional District seat. The forum, open to the public, will be held Thursday, October 21 beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Colleges Sharp Theater, located in the Berrie Center. The public is invited to ask the candidates questions.
The five in the running are: Scott Garrett, Republican, freshman representative; Anne Wolfe, Democrat; Victor Kaplan, Libertarian; Gregory Pason, Socialist and Thomas Phelan, New Jersey Conservative Party.
The candidates bring a wide range of political and professional experience to their campaigns. Garret was elected to the House of Representatives in 2002, winning the seat formerly held by Marge Roukema. He served in the New Jersey General Assembly from 1990 to 2002. He presently serves on the House Financial Services and Budget committees.
Wolfe is a former banker who has served on the Bergen County Utility Authority (1993 -1998) and the Bergen County Improvement Authority (1992 2004). She also served as a special administrator of enforcement for the Environmental Protection Agency, region five. Wolfe is a member of the League of Women Voters.
Kaplan has a background in political science and hails from Kiev, Ukraine.
Pason was the national secretary of the Socialist Party, U.S.A., and co-chair of the New Jersey Local of the National Writers Union. In 2000 and 2002, he ran for the U.S. Senate. In 1997, he ran as the Socialist nominee for governor.
Phelan is a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He is a former New York City police detective and is president of Universal Detectives, Inc. In addition, he is an author and radio talk show host.
