Shalom Gorewitz, Video Artist and Ramapo College Professor, Exhibits Digital Prints
(Mahwah) - Shalom Gorewitz, an artist and professor of media art and critical theory at Ramapo College of New Jersey, will exhibit a series of digital prints at the Society for the Advancement of Judaism in New York City through December. A reception and video screening is scheduled Thursday, November 13 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Society. The artist will talk about his work in a presentation, “Degrees of Light and Darkness,” on Saturday, December 27 at 9 a.m.
The series’ title, “(In)direct Light,” refers to the Hasidic belief that the world is illuminated by indirect light. It is believed that through meditative practice and contemplation of nature, one can sometimes see beyond the shadows. Gorewitz’s complex and challenging works range in theme from circumcision, to the relationship of Buddhism and psychology, the death of Paul Wellstone (a U.S. Senator who died in a small plane crash) and the teachings of St. Francis.
Several of the works were recently displayed at the George T. Potter Library Gallery at Ramapo College and Deep Listening Space in Kingston, NY. Gorewitz, a pioneer video artist as well as a Ramapo College professor, is a Guggenheim Fellow whose work has been shown internationally in museums, galleries, festivals and on television.
“The Society for the Advancement of Judaism is part of the Reconstructionist movement, which champions art and personal expression as integral to spiritual practice,” he says. Of his exhibit Gorewitz says, “These panels are full of scrambled Hebrew words and letters, sacred ritual objects and fragments of prayers. These references are intentionally ambiguous and open to diverse interpretations.”
