Expressionist Paintings By Rita Herzfeld Display ‘Energy That Almost Spills Off the Canvas’

(Mahwah) – Expressionist paintings by New Jersey artist Rita Kaplan Herzfeld will be exhibited in the George T. Potter Library Galleries at Ramapo College of New Jersey through August 29. Her work, on paper and canvas, is in the tradition of American modernist abstraction. Herzfeld is a resident of Edison.

“What I seek in my paintings is a contained energy that almost spills off the canvas, but is balanced by shapes and colors and lines that somehow avoid knocking each other out, says Herzfeld. She explains: “I seek vibrancy and want the onlooker to be drawn into the paintings to observe works that are not just pleasing to the eye but have a sense of mystery, depth, energy and display a tenuous balance of all that goes into a successful work of art. It can be compared to a magician trying to keep all the plates spinning without them falling, or a parent knowing when to “let go” and hope their children will survive and flourish.”

Herzfeld has had solo exhibits at The Chubb Atrium Gallery, Johnson & Johnson Corporate Headquarters, A.I.R. Gallery, East L.A. Gallery and the Douglass College Library. Group exhibitions include Gary Snyder Fine Art, River Run Gallery, Monmouth Museum, Hunterdon Museum of Art, City Without Walls Gallery, International Gallery Pusan (Korea) and the Academy of Fine Arts in Tianjin, China.

During the summer, the Potter Library Galleries are open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (201) 684-7147.
