The American Boychoir and the Newark Boys Chorus School Celebrate the Season With a Joint Performance
(Mahwah) – The American Boychoir and the Newark Boys Chorus School will celebrate the holiday season with a joint performance at Ramapo College of New Jersey, Friday, December 13 at 8 p.m. in the Sharp Theater.
For over 60 years, the American Boychoir has been dazzling audiences worldwide with its unique blend of resonant tones, musical sophistication, effervescent spirit and ensemble virtuosity. The Boychoir, which is located in Princeton, regularly performs and records with world-class artists and ensembles: from the venerable New York Philharmonic to the incomparable Chanticleer, from legendary jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis to Christian pop sensation Michael W. Smith, from opera diva Jessye Norman to Irish tenor Frank Patterson.
The American Boychoir School is home to students in grades five through eight, but the School also plays host to a select group of younger students in its After-School Apprentice Program. The program is designed for boys local to the School’s Princeton location who are interested in becoming members of The American Boychoir. The Apprentices practice twice weekly with the Resident Training Choir and take part in a concert at the end of the school year.
Carol, a CD released by the American Boychoir, represents a sampling of music from the past 500 years and from many nations. The tracks include "Carol of the Bells," “The Coventry Carol,” “This Christmastide,” “Christmas Day,” “O Holy Night,” “What Child Is This,” “Away in a Manger,” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”
The Newark Boys Chorus School was founded in 1969. Known as Newark’s “Musical Ambassadors,” the Chorus has been heard throughout the world with a diversified repertoire that includes African folksongs, traditional classical music, spiritual folk music, and contemporary show tunes, pop and jazz. The Newark Boys Chorus School has performed in prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, Lincoln Center, and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.
The Newark Boy's Chorus School was founded on the model of the great cathedral schools of England, but its purpose has been to provide an artistic and academic beacon to the whole community. The school — the academic and musical home to 75 boys from fourth through eighth grade— is located in downtown Newark. The chorus, under the direction of music director Donald Morris, tours extensively both nationally and internationally, including South Africa and Jamaica.
