New Science Major Prepares Students For Careers in Journalism, Business, Public Administration and For Graduate School

(Mahwah) – A new Integrated Science Studies (ISS) major at Ramapo College of New Jersey is the first in the state to address the interdisciplinary education needs of students planning to work as science journalists, for science-based corporations such as pharmaceuticals, and in many areas of government. The ISS major will prepare science students for careers in public administration, environmental regulation and administration, science journalism, science and technology assessment and administration in business, business administration in science-based services, law, and for graduate and professional studies in business administration and science. Students will be accepted into the program beginning fall 2003.

The interdisciplinary curriculum consists of a solid core background in chemistry, biology, physics, environmental science and mathematics, complemented by upper-level coursework in a selected concentration. The six upper-level concentrations are: biology/environmental studies; physical science; science journalism; science, technology and society; public policy/administration; business administration/MBA track. The degree to be granted upon the completion of the curriculum is a Bachelor of Science in Integrated Science Studies with the upper level concentration designated (for example, B.S. in Integrated Science Studies – Science Journalism).

In developing the major, careful attention was placed on the breadth and depth of the scientific knowledge to be acquired by students, particularly at the foundation level.

The structure of the base curriculum allows students flexibility within the major as well as opportunities to select a more specialized science curriculum later on. Students who begin as integrated science studies majors may later decide to complete their studies in another major within the School of Theoretical and Applied Science. Those who successfully complete the ISS major may choose to obtain teacher certification or go on to graduate/professional schools in the sciences, business administration or other areas of study.
