Ramapo Students Add a Contemporary Twist to the Art of Mask Theater in Performance of The Raven

(Mahwah) – The Raven, a play by Carlo Gozzi performed in the ancient tradition of Commedia dell’ Arte, will be presented in the Adler Theater at Ramapo College of New Jersey Wednesday, October 23, through Sunday, October 27. The play is a production of the Ramapo College Theater Program. Performances are at 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday with additional performances at 2 p.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday. Commedia dell’ Arte flourished in Italy from the 14th to the 18th centuries. The art form incorporates masks, stock characters, physical comedy and improvisation.

Jim Calder, the play’s director, is a veteran actor, director and teacher. Among his numerous projects, he had a lead role in the PBS children’ series, Noddy and Friends and directed the Lincoln Center Institute production of Woza Albert! He teaches acting at the Tisch School of the Arts in New York City and is a master teacher at the Michael Howard Studio. He previously taught at Lang College, The New School and was guest instructor and director at Prince University. He received grants from the Arts International Fund, the U.S./Mexico Fund for Culture, the National Endowment for the Arts and the new York State Council on the Arts, among many others.
